BMHS golfers take to the course in Stateline

Rangel shoots 93 for Longhorns

The Battle Mountain High School boys golf team made its way West last Thursday to take on the impressive Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Windy weather along with rain and lightning greeted the golfers prior to play. The nasty weather stayed with the golfers throughout the day, which was hosted by Whittell High School. Edgewood Tahoe has played host to a US Senior Open as well as the current celebrity golf championship every July.

Battle Mountain shot a 570 on the day in thee 17-team field that featured Division I-A and III/IV schools. Elko claimed the team title with an impressive 434. Spring Creek was second at 444, while North Tahoe was fourth one stroke back at 445. Churchill County was fourth with a 463 and Lowry was fifth at 467.

The Longhorns were sixth out of the nine Division III teams that played. Battle Mountain will be back at Edgewood on Thursday for the Division III North Regional Championships.

“This was a good practice round for the Zone tournament this week,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “Five of the guys had never even seen Edgewood before. Combine that with a three- hour steady down pour of rain and you get the high scores that we shot. Hopefully, we can use this as experience for the only tournament that matters and that is this Thursday.”

The top three teams and top five individuals on non-qualifying teams advance to the state championships in Pahrump on May 17-18.
