The Battle Mountain track and field team traveled to Eureka on Friday, April 22, to compete at the Eureka Invitational. Even though it was a cool and extremely windy day, the team recorded 27 career bests and five season bests.

The boys team finished second behind Spring Creek with 130 points and the girls were fourth with 29 points. Many of the career bests came from the throwers behind the coaching of Fritz Knight.

Andrew Cox earned a gold medal in the 400 meters with a winning time of 56.82 seconds. He also earned a runner-up finish in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 8 inches. Cox placed eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 35-2.50. He finished the day running the lead-off leg in the silver medal 4x200 relay.

“Andrew continues to be a leader by example,” said BMHS coach Stephanie Potter.

Blake Dorian earned a gold medal in the triple jump with a winning leap of 41 feet. Dorian continues to be second on the state Division III list for the triple jump. Dorian took a break from his individual running events to run the anchor legs in the silver medal 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

DJ Potter collected silver medals in both the shot put (40-7.50) and the discus with a toss of 119-1.

“DJ continues to be consistent in the throwing events, where he is still ranked second on the state Division III list in both events,” added the coach.

Regan Knight earned a silver medal in the triple jump with a career-best leap of 38-7.35. He also placed eighth in the discus with a season-best toss of 100-9.

Alec Liebhardt placed second in the long jump with a career-best leap of 18-7.75. He also ran 12.31 in the 100-meter dash and 26.61 in the 200 meters.

“Alec continues to be a solid leader on our team this year,” Potter said.

David Chavez picked up a silver medal in the 200 meters with a career-best time of 25.05. He ran a season-best 12.11 in the 100 meters and he finished the day running in the silver medal 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Potter added that Chavez continues to be a solid sprinter for the Longhorns.

The boys 4x100 relay of Liebhardt, Dorian, Chavez and Austin Wilkins were second with a time of 49.05. The boys 4x200 relay of Cox, Dorian, Chavez and DeAndre Powell earned a silver medal with a time of 1:39.76. The boys 4x400 relay of Chavez, Saul Miramontes, Tristin Cordingley and Daimean Diaz earned silver in a time of 4:43.77. The girls 4x400 relay of Sarah Mills, Skotti Torrence, Cheyenne Brock and Liliana Chavez were in the runner-up spot with a time of 5:39.94.

Ren Avedician led the Lady Longhorns today by being the only individual medalist by earning a bronze in the discus with a career-best distance of 86-6. She threw the shot put 23-8.25 and finished the day running in the fourth-place 4x100 relay.

Tristin Cordingley was third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 21.96. He ran the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 53.99 to place fifth. Cordingley ran the 200 meters in a career-best time of 31.14 and finished the day earning silver medal in the 4x400 relay. Potter noted he continues to shine in the hurdle events.

The boys 4x800 relay of Miramontes, Powell, Ryan Manning and Diaz placed third with a time of 10:36.18. The girls 4x800 relay of Lizzie Sadler, Torrence, Kandise Baird and Daniela Rios earned a bronze medal with a time of 15:33.92.

Diaz had a great day by placing in all four of his events. He earned a fourth-place in the 400 meters with a career-best time of 62.13. Diaz also had career best in the 800 meters with a seventh-place time of 2:35.57. He finished the day earning silver in the 4x400 relay and bronze in the 4x800 relay.

“Daimean is going to be a key runner for us in the relays as we near the zone meet,” Potter said.

The girls 4x100 relay of Avedican, LaRae Tomera, Justine Jury and Liliana Chavez ran a 61.53 to place fourth.

Mills placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 21.68. She also tied for eighth-place with teammate Jury in the high jump with a height of 4-2. Mills finished the day running the lead-off leg in the silver medal 4x400 relay. Potter said Mills continues to be consistent in the hurdles and the high jump.

Cooper Burkhart beat out teammate Eddie Morfin in the shot put by one inch to earn sixth-place honors with a throw of 35-8.25. Burkhart also threw 86-1 in the discus. Morfin placed in both throwing events. He was sixth in the discus with a toss of 105-1.50. Morfin was seventh in the shot put behind with a distance of 35-7.25.

Powell ran a career-best time of 2:34.53 to place sixth in the 800 meters. He also earned a silver medal in the 4x200 relay and the bronze medal in the 4x800 relay. The coach added that Powell has been solid for Battle Mountain in the relays.

Brock placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 64.98. She also jumped 4-0 in the high jump and had a distance and career-best leap of 10-1.25 in the long jump. She finished the day running in the silver medal 4x400 relay.

“Cheyenne continues to work hard and try new events each week,” Potter said.

The girls 4x200 relay of Sadler, Tomera, Torrence and Liliana Chavez were sixth with a time of 2:17.45. Jury tied for eighth-place with teammate in the high jump at 4-2. Jury also ran in the fourth-place 4x100 relay.

In other performances, Sadler ran the 200 meters in 92.81 and the 800 meters at 3:56.07, Tomera stopped the watch at 15.53 in the 100 meters, Daniel Tovar had throws of 32-9 (shot put) and 92-7 (discus) and Samantha Broadway had a time of 33.55 in the 200 meters and throws of 22-1.25 (shot put) and 63-3 (discus).

Dakota Chadwick had a leap of 14-10 in the long jump and ran the 100 meters in 12.50. Jackie Martin had throws of 19-10.75 (shot put) and 60-7 (discus) and Miramontes ran the 200 meters at 29.48 and 400 meters (65.38).

Torrence had a time of 34.28 in the 200 meters. Kandise Bell ran the 200 meters at 38.56 and 400 meters in 90.39 and Hailey Godman clocked in at 17.44 in the 100 meters and 36.56 in the 200 meters.

Wilkins had a time of 12.15 in the 100 meters, Liliana Chavez had a leap of 12-8 in the long jump, Ryan Manning ran the 800 meters at 3:15.6 and Schelbe Hall had times of 16.67 (100 meters) and 36.71 (200 meters).

Daniela Rios had a mark of 9-2 in the long jump, Shylo Burkhart had throws of 25-7 (shot put) and 73-5 (discus) and Esma Cheno had career-bests in the shot put (22-11.50) and discus (70-1).

Cassie Eusebio had a toss of 19-10.50 in the shot out and 60-2 in the discus, Jasmine Lopez had throws of 20-2 (shot put) and 64-7 (discus) and Adriene Burkhart threw the shot put 11-10 and discus 38-0.

Battle Mountain closes out the regular season Friday in Fernley.
