In Division III Northern series play against the Yerington Lions last weekend in Yerington, the Battle Mountain baseball team dropped three to start the season out 0-3 in League play, and 4-5 overall.
The Longhorns were shut out on Friday evening 9-0, lost 11-6 on Saturday morning, and lost 11-1 in the bottom half of Saturday’s doubleheader, with the game called after five innings on the mercy rule.
In Friday’s loss, Yerington pitcher Dakota Aiazzi threw a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and giving away one walk while facing only 24 batters.
Yerington scored nine runs on seven hits and two walks. One run was scored on an error.
In the first of Saturday’s games, the Longhorns made a promising start, posting two runs in the top of the first inning to jump out ahead. Yerington answered with five in the bottom of the second. The Longhorns battled back with a run in the third, but the Lions also scored to keep their three run advantage.
Three Longhorn runs in the fourth were answered by two in the fourth and three in the fifth, and the last two innings passed without further scoring to end the game at 11-6.
Yerington pitcher Daniel Sciarani tossed a complete game. He allowed six runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out 12.
The second Saturday game was all Yerington, as the Lions scored two in the first, four in the second, and two in the third before the Longhorns plated a run in the top of the fifth. The Lions brought three home in the bottom of the fifth, and the contest was called on the mercy rule, 11-1.
Yerington pitcher George Clark needed no relief, allowing one run on three hits in 5 innings pitched.
The Longhorns travel again next weekend, playing another three-game series at North Tahoe. The Lakers are also 0-3 in league play, after last weekend’s sweep by Pershing County.
