As a memorial to her brother, Delfino, Herlinda Hernandez, a lifelong educator, has pledged to fund a five-year program of scholarships (with the possibility of renewal) for graduating seniors of Albert M. Lowry High School. Delfino, who passed away last September 23rd, was a long time resident of Winnemucca and a 1964 graduate of Humboldt County High School; he also served in the Nevada National Guard.
Delfino was a professional barber by trade and made a good living at it. The scholarships are to be awarded to graduating seniors who are not planning to pursue a four-year university degree. Rather, they are to be given to students who would benefit from a course of study at a junior college, trade or vocational school that would prepare them to enter the work force and to become citizens leading a dynamic and productive life. Possible courses of study would include: technology in welding, diesel, electrical systems or industrial millwright, carpentry, land surveying/geomatics, legal aide, physician’s assistant, and barber school, or course.
The two $1,000 annual scholarships would assist students with tuition, registration and other required fees associated with their postsecondary education. The first two Delfino Hernandez Scholarships are to be awarded at the high school’s Scholarship Awards Night next June 2, 2016. A student can apply for this scholarship through Lowry High School’s Career Center. The applications are due ASAP.
Herlinda Hernandez, a retired professor of languages and literatures (Indiana University of Pennsylvania), resides in Reno.
