The wrestling action was heating up all around the country this past weekend. From the NCAA championships in Madison Square Garden to the Tah-Neva League qualifier in Winnemucca, fans were treated to intense wrestling action.
The Battle Mountain Junior High School wrestling team stepped up the pace and put some distance between themselves and the competition, as they ran away with the team title for their third tournament win of the season.
“This was a good weekend for us,” said coach Mitch Domagala. “The kids stepped up and took it to their opponents. They wrestled hard all day, and that’s what we’re looking for.”
Leading the charge for the Shorthorns were Declan McClary, Stone Whitlock, Jose Guizar, Hunter Natoli, Jordan Gonzalez, Thomas Cardinal and Lyle Whitten who all claimed first-place honors.
Terrence Fetterly, Zach Duggan, Brice Domagala, Kobe Lake, Daniel Henslee, Michael Malone, Nolan Chopp, Thomas Amezcua, Joey Huhta and Owen Oakes finished as runners-up.
Bringing home the bronze medal with third place outings were Sean Scherer, Vincent Rosas and Hunter Anderson.
Those also wrestling were Lillie Haney, Anthony Silva, Braxton Nield, Kaydince Hill, Austin Behrman, Asher Bundrock, Scott Wall, Emilio Morfin, Zyelynn Putt, Michael Lovelace and Tyler Rochester.
“This group is so close to taking over and dominating,” said the coach. “They work real hard and by next season they will be placing in these tournaments.”
Battle Mountain will be wrestling Saturday in the Tah-Neva league championships at Lovelock. Action is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Pershing County High School.
