Shorthorn wrestlers post strong start to new year at opening tournament in Lovelock

As a new wrestling season started, the Battle Mountain Junior High School wrestling team hit the mats going full speed as they captured the team title this past Saturday at the Lovelock Invitational.

“The kids have been working really hard the past two weeks getting ready for the season,” said coach Mitch Domagala. “We have a nice mix of returning wrestlers and new faces, so this promises to be an exciting year.”

The Shorthorns wrestled hard all day and at the end stood above the 10-team field with Fernley and Winnemucca finishing in the next two spots.

Leading the charge for Battle Mountain were Declan McClary, Stone Whitlock, Jose Guizar, Lyle Whitten, Jordan Gonzalez and Thomas Amezcua who capturrd first place-finishes.

Joining them in the finals were runner-ups Zach Duggan, Joey Huhta, Brice Domagala, Kobe Lake and Michael Malone. Finishing in third were Sean Scherer, Hunter Natoli, Terrance Fetterly, Hunter Andersen and Owen Oakes. Anthony Silva and Nolan Chopp came home in fourth place.

Also wrestling but coming up just short of placing, were Lillie Haney, Hafen Smith, Kaydince Hill, Braxton Nield, Austin Behrman, Asher Bundrock, Emilio Morfin, Anna Cochran and Michael Lovelace.

“We saw a lot of good things happen today from all of these kids,” Domagala said. “They wrestled well for the first time out this season. We still have a lot of work to do to clean up our wrestling, but are leading in the right direction,” added Coach Domagala.

The wrestlers are back in action on Saturday as they make the trip down I-80 to Fernley.
