Dear Editor,
In one of the commissioner’s meetings, not sure when, but recently the commissioners decided to not let new companies come into town and won’t let any new businesses in. In other words they want to keep Battle Mountain a closed town, which makes no sense at all. By doing that no new jobs, no new businesses etc. but if you own a business, or people in a higher up job, can use their contacts to find jobs for their kids, boyfriends, etc. The commissioners are hoping for a grant for kids for kids, really? There was one place for kids in this town, but now that building is up for sale! Kids right now are looking for summer jobs but if you aren’t related to someone in power hang it up. People are getting laid off from the mines because the price of gold has dropped, rents in this town are like 700.00 a month, and higher how do you get a place to live on minimum wage? But we’ll put a pond at the golf course and make the tax payers pay for that, really! People are selling their homes but that’s not doing so great that I’ve seen. Who in their right mind would move up here, no jobs, and if the town people don’t know you, you can surely bet you won’t get a job! But who gave the commissioner’s that right to decide for people in town? This town gets federal grants from the government, but the commissioners decide where that money goes and it’s not to improve this town, and draw people in or new businesses. I see in the near future this town becoming a ghost town and more people leaving than moving here. The commissioners need to bring in more industry and more businesses to keep this town on the map!!
Thank you,
Cindy Hampton
