It may take a couple of weeks to see how the Battle Mountain High School boys golf team will fare this season.
The Longhorns lost a majority of their team to graduation and Mountain View Golf Course is undergoing renovations. Playing on the course is a problem right now.
Battle Mountain traveled to Hawthorne last Friday to play in a preseason tournament and shot 576 on the Walker River Golf Course layout.
The Longhorns took just five golfers on the trip and was led by Alan Rangel with a 90. Brody Young carded a 95 and Brandon Stallard shot a 126. Alex Lopez (129) and Jacob Turner (136) rounded out the scores.
“After four days of practice, we had a match so this was an extremely difficult week to judge where we will fit in,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “In fact, we only had five golfers because of prior commitments and other things. It was good for these five kids to get away from our course, which is under renovations, and get a course in good shape and play in some nice weather.”
Battle Mountain gets the regular season going on Wednesday, March 16, at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko.
“The match will give us a better indication as to how this team, which has lost so much experience from last year’s, will fare this year,” Wallock said.
