Letter to the Editor: Kudos on Memorial Day

Kudos to organizers of Memorial Day Celebrations

Dear Editor,

The Memorial Day Celebration at the cemetery this year was very impressive and well organized. I have attended several services there over the years and I believe this was one of the best.

I wanted to thank those who worked so hard to put that together. Sometimes in the past it has been difficult to hear the speakers, but not this year. At least from where I stood everyone was easy to hear making it a more pleasant experience. The honored speaker, Major General Zachary F. Doser, had a voice that probably needed no microphone, but the ones in use worked wonderfully for those that did.

The Bell family was a major contributor to the success of the day with their singing and playing musical instruments, including Humboldt County Commissioner Mike Bell on the bagpipes. Christlike Family Ministries Pastor and VFW Chaplin Allen Peavy acted as master of ceremonies and did a commendable job.

Part of the service Monday was a speech by our very own Mayor Di An Putnam. I have heard her give many speeches over the years, but this may very well have been her best. It was evident that she had spent time putting it together and making sure it was just right.

Carl Edwin Holcomb, 89, was honored as Humboldt County Veteran of the Year. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and stays active in the community.

As a veteran of the Vietnam era I always appreciate it when people show their appreciation for those who have obeyed the call of their country and in particular those who have given all. I appreciate all the work that went into organizing and putting on this wonderful experience and all who participated. May God continue to bless the USA as we look to Him for guidance.
