The countdown for summer vacation was almost complete. But, one week before school let out, students from Lovelock and Imlay Elementary schools traded their classrooms for the athletic field. The entire student bodies of both schools channeled their end-of-year jitters into a full day of running, throwing, and jumping under sunny skies. It was Fun Day, an annual event at the school. Shea Murphy is principal of LES and IES. “I am always amazed at the precision of the track meet,” she said. “Everyone knows what their jobs are and they get it done.”
The Frontier Community Coalition donated multicolored tee-shirts to organize the children by grade level. Sheriff Jerry Allen and Chief of Police Mike Mancebo chased errant softballs and kept time. Special education teacher Ed Bake fired the pop gun that signaled the start of each race. Some of the kids plugged their ears in anticipation of the pop.
Shauna and Abby Bake helped make sure the athletes made it to all their events. ‘Nurse Debby’ Pontius was ready for sprained ankles and heat related illnesses. Murphy worked the concession stand. Numerous teachers, friends and family kept the event running smoothly.
“We are lucky to have amazing staff and volunteers to help make this event a success every year,” said Murphy.
