Battle Mountain will be sending three young ladies to the National High School Finals Rodeo in July in Gillette, Wyo.
Riata Goemmer, a rookie on the Nevada High School Rodeo Association circuit, was the women’s all-round champion this year with 862 points. Dally Goemmer was second with 777.75 points, holding off Las Vegas’ Bailey Fulmer for reserve all-around honors. Kaylee Filippini, also a rookie, was ninth in the all-around standings with 431.25 points.
Riata Goemmer was third in the season-long standings in barrel racing with 172.50 points and qualified for the national finals in the event. She was also third in girls cutting with 205.50 points and third ion reined cow horse with 190.50 points. Participants that finish in the top four of their events after the state finals qualify for the national finals.
She placed sixth in pole bending and eighth in goat tying. Her sixth and eighth-place finishes in pole bending and goat tying advanced her to the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca later this month. In addition, she will be in the Silver State Rodeo in team roping.
At the state finals, Riata Goemmer posted times of 18.294 seconds, 18.053 and she saved her best for last in the short go-around at 17.617. She had one successful run in breakaway roping with a time of 11.140 in the first performance.
Goemmer was second in girls cutting in the first performance and won the second performance of cutting with a score of 145.50. She scored 136 points in the short go. After getting no times in the first two performances of goat tying, Goemmer recorded a time of 12.0 in the short go. She had two strong runs in pole bending with times of 21.543 and 21.960. Goemmer won the second performance of reined cow horse with a score of 294 points.
Riata along with Dally did not have a time in the first performance of team roping, but the duo came back strong in the final two outings with times of 22.830 and 23.000.
Dally Goemmer finished third in the season-long standings in pole bending with 179 points. She will be headed to Wyoming in that event as well as girls cutting. Goemmer was fourth in cutting with 188.50 points.
Goemmer just missed out on a national finals bid in reined cow horse, where she finished fifth with 167.25. She will be in Winnemucca at the SSIR in that event. Goemmer was 10th in barrel racing with 68.50 points, 12th in goat tying with 55.50 points and 16th on breakaway roping. Those that finish fifth through 15th after the state finals qualify for the SSIR.
Dally Goemmer had three solid times of 18.017, 18.748 and 18.067 in barrel racing at the state finals in Fallon. She had one successful run in breakaway roping at 9.920 in the second performance. In goat tying, Goemmer had a time of 10.250 in the first performance and 9.740 in the short go. She won the first performance in pole bending at the sate finals to solidify her spot in the national finals.
Filippini was crowned the state champion in girls cutting with 231.30 points and is going to Wyoming. She was fourth in reined cow horse with 181 points and 28th in breakaway roping.
In the state finals in Fallon, Filippini was first in the opening performance and the short go-around to move up from third place to with the state crown. Filippini was sixth in reined cow horse before the finals, but was second in the first performance and the winner in the short go-around with 292.50 points to lace second in the average and jump to fourth place.
Fernley’s Dario Ceresola was the boys all-around champion with 796.50 points. Fallon’s Cord Hendrix was second at 716.75 and Wells’ Daniel Eary (539.25) was third. Fallon’s Sam Goings (459.50) and Caleb Hendrix (454.75) rounded out the top five.
This years state champions included Peio Laughlin (Elko), bareback, Sadie Leyba (White Pine), barrel racing, Hendrix (Fallon), boys cutting, Bailey Fulmer (Las Vegas), breakaway roping, Cam Benbaugh, (Elko), bull riding, Filippini (Batle Mountain), girls cutting, Julianne Montero (Humboldt County), goat tying, Brynn Lehman (Douglas/Carson), pole bending, Catherine Odgers (White Pine), queen, Dylan Heishman (independent), reined cow horse, Sadie Leyba (White Pine), rifle shooting, Shaun Mentaberry (Humboldt County), saddle bronc, Tyler Bundy (Alamo), steer wrestling, Blaine Jensen/Jake Cerini (Fallon), team roping, Jordan Taylor (Moapa), tie-down roping and Tyler Whipple (White Pine), trap shoot.
The National High School Finals Rodeo takes place in Gillette, Wyo., from July 17-23 at the Cam-Plex Event Facility. The draw for each event will be determined at a later date.
The NHSFR is the “World’s Largest Rodeo,” featuring approximately 1,500 contestants from across the United States, Canada and Australia.
Action at the event is non-stop, with rodeo performances being conducted twice each day. The top-twenty contestants in each event then advance to a final round of competition to determine who will walk away with the coveted championship buckles.
Boys events at the NHSFR include bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping and cutting. Girls events include breakaway roping, barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, cutting, team roping, and the NHSRA queen contest. Boys and girls compete together in Team Roping, but are separate in all other events.
