The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team came away from its latest road trip with a split of two games and remained in the hunt to capture a regional playoff berth.

BMHS knocked off by PCHS

Battle Mountain made the trek along Interstate 80 on Friday afternoon to Lovelock to take on rival Pershing County. The Lady Longhorns got off to a slow start and could never recover in a 42-28 loss.

Battle Mountain’s McKenna Jones had the lone field goal in the first half for the Lady Longhorns, who were held to six points in the first half.

“It was just the opposite of the week before,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “We could make a shot or a free throw.”

Pershing County scored nine of the first 10 points of the game, when Jones provided the Lady Longhorns with their first field goal at the 2:56 minute mark of the first period.

The Lady Mustangs led 14-3 after eight minutes of action and increased the advantage to 18-3 early in the second quarter. The only points by Battle Mountain in the second quarter were free throws by Sruti Bhakta and Riane Schroeder.

Battle Mountain’s offense began to click in the third quarter as Bhakta scored six points coming out of the break. Despite the effort, Pershing County extended its lead to 38-14.

The Lady Longhorns fought back in the fourth quarter to outscore Pershing County 14-4, but it was not enough to complete the comeback.

Bhakta led Battle Mountain with nine points, Schroeder added eight, Jones four, Grace Melver four and Isabella Deallah and Liscet Diaz two each.

Lady Longhorns crush Nighthawks

Battle Mountain got back on the winning track on Saturday with a 53-30 win at Silver Stage

Bhakta had 16 points and six assists and Diaz and Melver added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

“The girls played pretty well in this game,” Tremayne said. “We started slow but full court press finally got to Silver Stage. We did a good job of sharing the ball. A good win for us after playing sloppy versus Lovelock the night before. Big weekend with Incline coming to BM this week.”

Battle Mountain hosts North Tahoe on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Incline on Saturday at 2 p.m.
