Unlike its boys counterparts, the end of the Christmas break was not as kind to the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team.
In their first action in two weeks, the Lady Longhorns lost 55-47 to West Wendover as they returned to the floor on Saturday afternoon in Battle Mountain.
The Lady Longhorns (1-2 Division III North, 7-7 overall) struggled on the offensive side of the ball in the first half and trailed 30-16 at halftime. Battle Mountain trailed by as many as 18 points in the contest.
“We came up short on the comeback,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “The girls played hard. We turned the ball over way to much and gave up way to many points in the first half. It was kind of hard to play coming out of the break.”
Battle Mountain bounced back in the second half with a much better defensive effort and trimmed the deficit to six points with four minutes to play. However, the comeback came up short, as the Lady Longhorns got no closer.
Freshman Grace Melver led Battle Mountain with eight points, Riane Schroeder added six points and eight rebounds and Yulisa Vazquez had five points.
Battle Mountain is back on its home floor on Friday night to play Yerington at 6 p.m. The Lions are 2-0 in league play with victories over Pershing County and Silver Stage.
“We need to keep improving on the boards and defensively,” Tremayne said. “The league looks as if anyone might beat anyone on any given night.”
