BMHS drops game to Lions

BMHS hosts a pair this weekend

The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team had an opportunity to put itself in a prime playoff spot with a win at Yerington last Saturday.

The Lady Longhorns had already beaten the Lions in Battle Mountain this season and a season-sweep would have given the squad all the tiebreakers over the Lyon County School.

However, the trip did not end well for the Lady Longhorns, with the Lions gaining a 44-32 victory. Added in with a win over West Wendover on the previous day, Yerington jumped into third place in the Division III North at 6-4.

Pershing County is tied with Yerington at 6-4 in league play, but the Lions defeated the Mustangs twice this season and hold the tiebreaker in that series.

Battle Mountain is currently on the outside looking in on the bid for a playoff berth. Incline (9-2) and West Wendover (7-3) have clinched playoff spots.

Yerington is in the regional tournament with a win over Incline or winless North Tahoe this week.

Pershing County makes the trip East to take on West Wendover and Battle Mountain.

If the Lady Longhorns sweep both games this weekend and Pershing County loses both, Battle Mountain makes the playoffs. There is also the possibility of a tie for fourth place, which would create a play-in game.

If Pershing County wins of one of two games and Battle Mountain splits its games this weekend, the Lady Mustangs would be in front of the Lady Longhorns.

Battle Mountain hosts Silver Stage on Friday at 6 p.m. and Pershing County Saturday at 2 p.m.
