Winnemucca theater group call for auditions

"The Last US Mail Stage Robbery"

For several years we have searched for a play set in and with a story about Northern Nevada. We have finally found one. It is based on a true historical event. As the title says: this is the story of The Last US Mail Stage Robbery: It occurred in Northern Nevada on a bitterly cold December day in 1916.

This is the third time that this play has been produced. The first production was in 2009 in Jarbidge, Nevada. Then last year it was performed to standing room only performances in Elko. For our production a considerable expansion of the play has been made.

As a result, our performance is quite different from a traditional play. It is a combined history lecture and a dramatic presentation of the crime. The history lecture is to place the play in its setting; both as taking place in a bar (in Jarbidge), and some background of what actually happened before and after the robbery. The history is fascinating but too many details to incorporate into the dialog of a play.

As a brief peek into the play/lecture, there is only one murder in the play. In real life there were three more, which remain unsolved. Maybe you, or the audience can discover ‘who done it.’ Then there’s the money … but we’ll leave that for the performance. If we talked about it now you might ….

Auditions will be held Friday Feb. 5 and 6 at the Methodist church (across the street from Winners) at 7 p.m.
