The Lowry High School wrestling team wrapped up its Christmas break at the Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno on Thursday.
As of press time on Thursday, the Buckaroos still had two wrestlers taking part in the tournament that features wrestlers from around the West.
Quint Bell at 152 pounds won his pigtail match over Matt Martinez of Piedra Valley, but lost in the first round to Erik Salicido of Rancho Bernardo.
Bell came back through the consolation bracket on Wednesday to win three matches. He started with a pin over Cameron Davis of Mountain House, followed by a 5-0 decision over Culver’s Jerron Rhen. In the third consolation round, Bell defeated Jace Horner of Mountain View, Ore., by a 10-2 decision.
Cade Billingsley (170) won his opening bout over Spring Creek’s Bayley Porreca 4-0, but lost in round two to Folsom’s Kaleb Reyes-Small by fall.
Billingsley came through the first rounds of the consolation bracket and beat Carson’s Jesse Case and Ukiah’s Cody Shepard by pin in the first period. Billingsley kept his tournament alive on Wednesday with a 3-2 win over Seth Rediger of Sprague.
The Buckaroos’ Ryan Johnson reached the fourth round in the consolation bracket at 152 pounds. He lost his opening match by a 7-3 decision, but bounced back with three straight wins. He pinned Vallivue’s Ian Booth, won by forfeit over Wooster’s Brendan Reich and he earned a 3-2 win over Spanish Springs’ Spencer Peterson.
Seth Hornbarger (160) and Trent McKellips (195) reached the third round of the consolation bracket, before being eliminated. Hornbarger dropped his first round match, but came back with a pair of wins by pin over Amador’s Chris Reese and Castro Valley’s Charles Alejo.
McKellips had the same fate with a first-round loss. The freshman received a bye in the first round of consolation and he pinned Vallivue’s Tye Lehmann in the second round.
After the first day of competition, Lowry was 40th out of 91 teams with 50.5 points.
Del Oro was in first place with 133.5 points and Spanish Springs was second at 125. Rancho Bernardo (114.5) was third and Mountain View, Ariz. (102) and Sprague (101.5) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Lowry is back in action at the Rollie Lane Invitational in Nampa, Idaho, on Friday, Jan. 6, and Saturday, Jan. 7.
