BATTLE MOUNTAIN — The Lowry High School wrestling team started its Christmas break with a short trip to take part in the Battle Mountain Brawl this past Thursday.
White Pine, Mineral County, Pershing County and Fernley joined the Buckaroos and host Longhorns in the dual meet. Lowry knocked off the combo team of White Pine and Mineral County 72-6 and Battle Mountain 45-27. A younger group of Buckaroo wrestlers took on a mix of all the other schools in the final dual.
In the match-up with White Pine/Mineral County, Lowry started off with three pins from Connor Starkey, Trent McKellips and Josiah Chapman. After no match at 285 pounds, Isaiah Blanco, Taylor Corak, Matthew Souza, Bryan Day and A.J. Gonzalez won by forfeit. Quint Bell won the final bout of the dual at 152 pounds by pin.
Against Battle Mountain, Lowry fell behind 15-0 after the first three matches, when the Isaiah Blanco picked up a win by forfeit at 106 pounds to make the score 15-6. The Longhorns added six more points at 113 pounds, as Cameron Thompson defeated Corak.
Lowry cut the deficit to 21-12, when Souza won by forfeit at 120 pounds. At 126 pounds, Nathen Blanco held on to beat Jake Legarza 5-3 and Day earned a win by forfeit at 120 pounds to tie the dual at 21.
Battle Mountain earned victories by decision at 138 and 145 pounds to go back up 27-21, but the Longhorns did not win again.
Bell tied the dual back up at 27 with his win by pin over Fernando Carrillo at 152 pounds. Seth Hornbarger gave thew Buckaroos the lead for good when he pinned Fabian Castaneda at 162 pounds. After battling through injuries at the start of the season, Cade Billingsley returned to win by pin at 170 pounds and Starkey finished off the dual with a pin.
In the final dual, Jimmy Rackley picked up a pair of wins, Cole Jones, Cade Bell, Caleb Sanchez, Ryan Johnson, Jeremiah Good and Chapman also won matches.
Lowry is in Reno toady and tomorrow for the Sierra Nevada Classic.
