Guadalupe “Lupita” Flores, 79, of Sparks Nevada passed away on Tuesday December 13th at Northern Nevada Medical Center due to respiratory failure.
She was born on October 9th 1937 in Durango Mexico to Pedro and Amelia Montelongo. The 7th of 9 Montelongo children, Lupe was a very serious child who was always running a mile a minute.
She married Jose Flores on December 4th, 1966 in Camarillo, California. In Durango Mexico she graduated from the University of El Normal with a teaching degree. She worked as an educator in Durango Mexico and after moving to the Winnemucca Nevada in 1977 she worked at Katie’s Foods as well as Humboldt General Hospital.
She lived in Winnemucca for 30 years before moving to Sparks to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Lupe was known best for her generosity, inexhaustible energy, enormous heart and exceptional cooking.
A staple at St Paul’s Catholic Church, she was heavily involved with the Spanish mass, baptisms, quinceaneras, funerals, weddings, and the Virgin de Guadalupe festival. A year after moving to Sparks, Father Jose Issac of St Paul’s was reassigned to Holy Cross Catholic Church in Sparks which happened to be Guadalupe’s new parish. Reunited, they began to work on developing all of the programs which had been so successful in Winnemucca.
She is survived by her children Jose Flores (Dawnn), Silvia Garcia (Rudolfo), Fernando Flores (Mary); her grandchildren who were the light of her life: Andrew, Matthew, Jake, Cameo, Ian, and Haven; and her siblings Angelica Ochoa, Hugo Montelongo, Tere Martinez, Magdalena Calderon, Gloria Ordaz, Christina Galindo, Armando Montelongo. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Jose Flores and her sisters Amelia Cervantez and Irma Cisneros.
There will be a viewing on Tuesday, December 20 from 4-8 P.M. at Walton’s Funeral Home, 2155 Kietzke Lane in Reno. Father Jose Issac will lead the Rosary at 5 PM.
Mass will be Wednesday, December 21 at 12:30 P.M. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 5650 Vista Blvd in Sparks.
The burial will follow after the service at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery, 2700 North Virginia Street in Reno.
A reception will be held at Holy Cross following the burial.
