It was a mixed bag of results for the Battle Mountain girls basketball team, who began its Northern 2A season in Lake Tahoe this past weekend.
The Lady Longhorns cruised past North Tahoe 49-12 on Friday, but were knocked off on Saturday by Incline 37-28.
BMHS crushes Lakers
Battle Mountain raced out to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in the rout to win its league opener.
Eight different players scored for Battle Mountain, with Sruti Bhakta leading the way with 11points. Isabella Deallah and Grace Melver each had six points.
Highlanders rally to beat Longhorns
For 16 minutes on Saturday, it appeared Battle Mountain was set to leave Lake Tahoe with a pair of wins. The Lady Longhorns jumped out to a 13-11 lead in the first quarter, and held the Highlanders to three points in the second quarter to go into the break with a 20-14 lead.
The advantage quickly disappeared as Incline held Battle Mountain to just eight points in the second half. After scoring just 14 points in the first half, Incline used a 14-5 run in the second quarter to lead 28-25. The Lady Longhorns managed just three points in the final eight minutes of action.
Melver and Bhakta paced Battle Mountain with seven and six points, respectively.
“In the second half, we went very cold and turned the ball over 25 times,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “We just really did not play very well. We need to get back to basics on offense and defense. We have a very tough league. We have to win on the road.”
BMHS gets past Wells
Battle Mountain made its home debut on Tuesday, Dec. 13, with a 46-43 win over Wells. The Lady Longhorns held a comfortable 23-13 lead aft halftime but was outscored 18-7 in the third quarter. Battle Mountain rallied in the final eight minutes to secure the win.
Yulisa Vazquez had 21 points and four steals and Bhakta added 11 points, five assists and four steals.
“The girls played well at the end made some clutch free throws and withstood there charge,” Tremayne said. “The girls played well in spurts. We are shooting the ball better. I think we are executing our offensive sets a little better. Still need to get better on defense.”
Battle Mountain is off until Friday, Jan. 6, when it travels to West Wendover for a 6 p.m. tip off. The road trip continues on Jan. 7 in Ely with a 2 p.m. game at White Pine.
The road trip continues at Pershing County on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 6 p.m.
