The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team started off the Northern 2A schedule with its longest road trip of the season.
The Longhorns were in Lake Tahoe this past weekend for a pair of games at North Tahoe and Incline. Battle Mountain opened with a 50-26 win at North Tahoe, but lost 61-32 to Incline on Saturday.
Longhorns crush Lakers
Battle Mountain had little trouble at North Tahoe as Chris Figueroa and Miles Piramide each scored 19 points in the victory. Figueroa had a double-double as he added 13 rebounds and three blocks. Piramide had four assists.
“This is one of the toughest road trips for me as a coach,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “I was pleased with our effort defensively against North Tahoe. We didn’t shoot great but we made enough shots to win with how well we defended and rebounded.”
Incline knocks off BMHS
Battle Mountain hung close with Incline in the first quarter, with the game tied at 11. However, the Highlanders ended the quarter with a pair of 3-point field goals and did not trail again. Incline used an 11-2 run in the second quarter to take an 18-13 advantage at halftime.
Incline continued to pull away in the second half and used a 15-9 spurt to close out the contest.
Mason Fuller led Battle Mountain with 12 points and three steals. Figueroa added nine rebounds and two blocks and Piramide had three steals and two assists.
“Against Incline we played a decent first quarter but gave up two 3-pointers in the final minute to go down six,” Wallock said. “We were ice cold from 3-point range. Incline was giving us the outside shot and packing it in against Chris. We absolutely need to make a few of those to loosen up the defense inside and we did not do that at all. Hopefully, the big loss will motivate us to work harder and get better as a team."
BMHS crushes Wells
Battle Mountain made its way to Wells on Tuesday, Dec. 13, and came away with a 57-31 victory. The Longhorns raced out to a 25-3 lead in the first quarter and did not look back.
Figueroa led all scorers with 18 points. Reese Artz and Austin Wallock each netted nine points and Piramide had six. Gabe Naveran scored four points and Diego Saenz had two.
Battle Mountain is off until Friday, Jan. 6, when it travels to West Wendover for a 7:30 tip off in the Northern 2A match-up. The Longhorns conclude the trip on Jan. 7 at White Pine at 3:30 p.m. Battle Mountain stays on the road to play Pershing County on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 7:30 p.m.
