It seems all the basketball teams in Humboldt County have been road warriors in the first couple of weeks of the season.

That is no different for the McDermitt High School girls basketball team, who finished up its fifth game in six days this past Tuesday in Pyramid Lake. The Lady Bulldogs held the Lakers to single digits in each of the first three quarters en route to a 50-31 victory. McDermitt improved to 5-2 on the season.

McDermitt nearly doubled up Pyramid Lake in the opening eight minutes and jumped out to a 15-8 advantage. It was much of the same in the second quarter, as the Lady Bulldogs pulled away for a 29-14 lead at the break.

McDermitt was not challenged in the second half and led by as many as 20 points in the non-conference triumph.

Precious Masters nearly outscored Pyramid Lake by herself with 26 points. The sophomore knocked down three 3-point field goals and had eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Senior Krissy Long posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. In addition she had four steals and two assists. Morissa Bitt netted six points to go with eight rebounds and freshman Jasmine Northrup had three points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Dacey Horn and Sienna Astor had two points apiece.

McDermitt wins three games at Virginia City

McDermitt made the trip to western Nevada last weekend to play in the Comstock Classic in Virginia City. The Lady Bulldogs knocked off Coleville, Calif., 57-12, Smith Valley 58-36 and Silver Stage 62-36. McDermitt’s only loss was a 53-46 decision to Battle Mountain

In the win over Coleville on Thursday Dec. 8, McDermitt ran away in the first quarter with a 24-0 run and never looked back against the California school. The Lady Bulldogs raced to a 38-2 lead at halftime.

Nine different players scored for McDermitt, with Masters and Long leading the way with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Both girls added 11 rebounds to finish with double-doubles. Masters added five assists and Long had five steals.

Horn contributed eight points, Megan Sam and Bitt six each, Andrea Villenueva and Northrup five each and Shania Lenior and Astor had two points apiece. Lenior and Northrup grabbed seven and six rebounds, respectively.

Lady Bulldogs rally past Smith Valley

McDermitt found itself in a tougher game to start out on Friday, Dec. 9, against Smith Valley. McDermitt held a two-point advantage after one quarter of play, but did not pull away until an 18-2 run in the fourth quarter in a battle of the Bulldogs.

Long led all scorers with 22 points, while Masters added 15 points and Sam 10. Northrup scored five, Bitt four and Lenoir two.

Nighthawks no match for Lady Bulldogs

In its second game on Friday, Dec. 9, McDermitt had little trouble versus Silver Stage of the Northern 2A. The Lady Bulldogs used another quick start to bury their opponent. This time it was a 23-8 run to start the game. McDermitt increased the margin to 51-23 at the start of the fourth quarter and was not challenged from there.

Masters was one of three McDermitt players in double figures, as she led all scorers with 20 points. Long scored 16 points and Northrup added 11. Bitt netted six points, Horn, Lenoir and Sam two each and Adrie Smart one.

Battle Mountain knocks off McDermitt

It was a match-up between playoff teams in the tournament finale on Saturday, Dec. 10, as McDermitt took on Battle Mountain of the Northern 2A.

This time, the Longhorns were the squad to earn the early lead and they held it the rest of the way. Battle Mountain led 20-10 after a quarter of play, but McDermitt trimmed the lead to single digits by halftime. The Lady Longhorns used a 16-11 run in the third quarter to put the contest out of reach.

Masters and Northrup paced McDermitt with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Long scored eight, Lenior six, Sam five, Smart three and Bitt two.

McDermitt took on North Lake (Silver Lake, Ore.) on Friday in the opening round of the Alisha Jenkins Memorial Tournament in Crane, Ore., Results were not available at press time.

The Lady Bulldogs take on Mitchell/Spray (Spray, Ore.) on Saturday at 3 p.m.

McDermitt closes out the calendar year at home against Rimrock, Idaho on Saturday, Dec. 30.
