Longhorns boys notch four wins in Virginia City

The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team made the best of its three-day trip to the Comstock Classic in Virginia City with four wins to improve to 7-2 on the season.

Battle Mountain cruised to a 73-49 victory over Smith Valley in its only game on Thursday. The Longhorns raced out to a 20-7 lead after a quarter of play and put the game out of reach with a 28-9 run in the second quarter to lead 48-16 at halftime.

Battle Mountain had four players in double figures, with Miles Piramide leading the way with 20 points. The junior added six assists and five steals. Chris Figueroa had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. The junior also had five assists and four blocks.

Austin Wallock and Mason Fuller each scored 13 points and Danny Diaz had five assists and Diego Saenz had three assists.

In its first game on Friday, Battle Mountain used another quick start to bury Coleville, Calif., 57-20. The Longhorns led the Wolves 37-14 at halftime and outscored the 1A school 11-2 in the third quarter.

Figueroa outscored Coleville by himself with 23 points to go with eight rebounds. Fuller added 14 points and Piramide had eight points and six rebounds. Wallock and Reese Artz had five rebounds apiece, Sergio Diaz had three assists and Saenz had four steals.

In the second game on Friday, Battle Mountain knocked off Virginia City 51-25. The Longhorns jumped out to an 18-6 advantage in the first quarter. Battle Mountain led 27-13 at halftime and outscored Virginia City 15-8 in the third quarter.

Figueroa had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds and two blocks. Piramide added 11 points and three assists. Fuller had six points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Battle Mountain closed out the tournament on Saturday with a 67-42 victory over McDermitt. The Longhorns raced out to a 30-10 lead after a quarter of play.

Artz had a team-high 16 points to go with six rebounds. Piramide had 14 points and five assists and Figueroa finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.

“It was a good weekend for us with lots of opportunities to improve,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “We are still sharing the ball very well with very unselfish play. We have an important week coming up with the dreaded Tahoe trip and the start of league play. We just need to maintain confidence and the unselfish attitude.”

Battle Mountain traveled to Wells on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Longhorns make the long trip to Lake Tahoe this weekend to open Northern 2A play.

Battle Mountain takes on North Tahoe on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Incline on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
