The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team continued its hot start on the season with four wins last weekend at the Comstock Classic in Virginia City.

“This was a strong weekend for the Lady Longhorns,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “We had at least seven players score in each game. The girls are playing at a very fast pace. The defensive pressure has been forcing numerous turnovers.”

Battle Mountain opened with a 45-37 win over Smith Valley this past Thursday. Sruti Bhakta had 10 points and five assists for the Lady Longhorns. Isabella DeAllah joined her with 10 points and contributed seven rebounds

Battle Mountain played twice on Friday and began the day with a 43-42 victory over Wells. The Lady Longhorns jumped out to a 17-10 advantage in the first quarter and held on from there. Battle Mountain built a 28-20 lead at halftime, but Wells stormed back with a 15-9 run in the third quarter to cut the gap to two points.

The Lady Longhorns held on in the fourth quarter as Yulisa Vazquez scored a team-high 12 points. Bhakta added seven points and six assists.

The second game of the day was much easier, as Battle Mountain cruised to a 56-20 win over host Virginia City, Grace Melver and Vazquez each scored 16 points. Senior Riane Schroeder added 10 points and nine rebounds. Battle Mountain concluded the tournament on Saturday with 53-46 win over McDermitt. The Lady Bulldogs were the 1A state runner-up a season ago.

Battle Mountain got a balanced scoring attack, with Vazquez leading the way with 17 points. DeAllah added nine and Paige Ripley netted eight points.

“The last game versus McDermitt was the most complete game that we have played,” Tremayne said. “We still need to continue improving of on the defensive side of the ball. The girls are doing a great job. It should be a real exciting season.”

Battle Mountain (8-1) hosted Wells on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.

The Lady Longhorns open Northern 2A play this weekend, starting in North Tahoe on Friday at 6 p.m. Battle Mountain is in Incline on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip. Those are the final games of the calendar year.
