The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity boys basketball team bounced back with five wins this past week.
The Longhorns took on the Independence varsity squad on Tuesday, Dec. 6, and won 49-46. Marcus Jury and Roberto Esparza led Battle Mountain with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Battle Mountain was home this past weekend to host its annual invitational and picked up four victories.
In Friday’s first game, Battle Mountain cruised to a 44-19 win over Carlin. Eddie Morfin and Bradley Rogers each had 11 points and Roy Chavira added eight.
The night cap was just as easy, as the Longhorns cruised to a 50-15 win over the Eureka JV, Chavira was in double figures with 11 points, while Alex Valles and Esparza had none and eight points, respectively.
Battle Mountain found it tougher going on Saturday, beating Tonopah 34-32 in its first game. Jury led the way with nine points, Esparza had seven points and Valles six.
Battle Mountain ended the tournament with a 31-15 win over Wells. Rogers had a team-high 10 points, while Chavira and Jury scored six and five points, respectively.
“Overall, it was a really good week for us, getting five wins in a five-day span,” said BMHS coach Tyler Samuelson. “We looked much better at times this week than we did last week. We’re still growing as a team and figuring out what our identity is, and it shows sometimes.”
Battle Mountain traveled to Wells on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Longhorns travel to North Tahoe on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. tip and Saturday to Incline for a 12:30 p.m. start.
