The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team made the short trip to Winnemucca this past weekend for the annual Cody Louk Invitational.
The Longhorns finished sixth as a team with 134 points. Spanish Springs of the Northern 4A was first with 321 points. Reno was second at 215 and Lowry (182) was third. Carson placed fourth with 165.50 points and Spanish Springs B team was fifth with 153 points.
Cameron Thompson took home the top spot in the 113-pound class. After receiving a bye in round one, it took Thompson just 91 seconds to pin North Valleys’ Trey Walters in the quarterfinals. Thompson earned a 9-4 decision over Spanish Springs’ Nick Foster in the semifinals. He had little trouble in the title bout, pinning Spanish Springs Owen Jones in the second period.
“I thought Cameron had one of the best performances of any of the wrestlers,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “I thought we did fairly well as a team.”
Jake Legarza placed fourth for the Longhorns at 126 pounds. Legarza defeated Fernley’s Tyler Egan in the second round by pin in 27 seconds. He advanced to the semifinals after beating Carson’s Johnny Lopez by a 6-2 decision. Legarza had to face one of the top wrestlers in the state and lost to Wooster’s Ian Timmins in the semifinals. Legarza won his consolation semifinal match by pin over Reed’s Josh Berryman, but lost to Spanish Springs’ Nicky Poalilo in the third-place bout.
Fernando Carrillo was fourth at 152 pounds. He cruised in his first two matches to reach the quarterfinals where he took on Lowry’s Quint Bell. Bell pinned him with just one second left in the second period. Carrillo bounced back to beat Reed’s Israel Casarez in the consolation semifinal, but lost again to Bell for third place.
DeAndre Powell was fifth in the 132-pound weight class. Powell pinned his first two opponents to reach the quarterfinals, where he knocked off Pershing County’s Eric Wagner in an 11-5 decision. Powell lost in the championship semifinal and consolation semifinal, before coming back to beat Sparks’ Walter Gudiel 11-3 for fifth place.
Tristin Cordingley placed fifth at 182 pounds. Cordingley lost his first match of the tournament, but came back to win three times in the consolation bracket. Cordingley lost in the consolation semifinals but he beat Spanish Springs’ Tanner Bray for fifth place.
Michael Malone finished sixth in the 120-pound weight class. He won his first two matches of the tournament, but did not wrestle in the fifth-place match.
Matt Rochester placed sixth in the 138-pound weight class. Rochester had little trouble in reaching the semifinals, with three quick wins. Rochester lost to Yerignton’s Cade Draper in the semifinals an did not wrestle in the fifth-place match.
Battle Mountain travels to Lovelock on Saturday for the Mustang Invitational at 9 a.m.
