After opening with four tough games in Reno, the Lowry High School boys basketball team quickly jumped into league play this past Tuesday in Fallon.
The Buckaroos held a five-point lead late in the game, but missed a couple shots in the final seconds, and lost 50-49 to Churchill County.
“We played some very tough teams in Reno,” said LHS coach Chad Peters. “We thought going into Fallon, it was a game that we thought we could win. They are a young team like us. Right now, we are athletic but not basketball smart. We need to go back and learn the fundamentals. We have to use everybody to do the things we need to do. We have been working on defense and not offense. We had some key turnovers late and didn't execute our out of bounds plays and offense to get the shots we needed.”
Lowry tailed 15-13 after a quarter of play, as the Buckaroos collected nine points from freshman Kobe Stoker and Dorsey Naveran. The duo combined for 21 points, with Naveran netting a team-high 15 points.
“I thought our young guys played with a lot more confidence,” Peters said. “They are getting there. The thing I liked about Fallon is that we competed.”
Lowry closed the gap to a point at halftime, but still trailed 26-25. Trailing by two points entering the fourth quarter, the Buckaroos rallied to lead by as many seven points with minutes to go.
Churchill County grabbed the advantage at 50-49, leaving Lowry a chance to win the game in the final seconds. However, the Buckaroos could not get a clear shot off in the final seconds.
Jed Teichert added 11 points, including six in the final eight minutes. Brady Lange added seven points, Dominic Solis five, Brendan Domire three and Joe Taylor two.
Lowry is back in action today (Saturday) at Fernley at 3:30 p.m. The Buckaroos travel to Spring Creek on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
“It was too bad that we had to lose a league game this quick, but we are learning,” Peters said. “I am willing to sacrifice some league games now to win in February.”
