With not a lot of experience back from a season ago, the Battle Mountain High School junior varsity boys basketball team opened its season last weekend at the Mustang Invitational in Lovelock.
Battle Mountain opened with a 42-17 loss to Fernley in the first round on Friday afternoon. Roberto Espraza paced the Longhorns with four points.
Later Friday evening, Battle Mountain dropped to the consolation bracket and defeated Dayton 30-29. Bradley Rogers had a team-high nine points, while Alex Valles and Esparaza had six points each.
In the fifth-place contest on Saturday, Battle Mountain was knocked off by host Pershing County 46-28. Roy Chavira and Esparaza paced the Longhorns with seven and six points, respectively.
“We had a tough schedule this weekend,” said coach Tyler Samuelson. “We showed some good things in each of the three games that we played, but we are still a very raw team. We don’t have a lot of experience back from last year, with only four players total coming back, and no starters, so it’s going to take us a little while to figure things out.”
Battle Mountain is home on Friday and Saturday to host the Longhorn Invitational at the high school.
