Obituary: Dorothy “Dottie” Witt Sykes

Dottie passed away November 22, 2016 peacefully in her sleep at home with family.

She was born in Tazewell, Virginia on Dec. 25, 1925 to Glenn and Ruth Ella (Reedy) Witt.

Dottie married Dr Frank J. Sykes II while he was in medical school in Richmond, Virginia in 1947. They lived where ever he chose to practice medicine. They spent time in Kaui and Honolulu, Hawaii, Yap in the South Pacific, Texas while Frank was serving his country, Crescent City, California, Burns, Oregon, and finally Winnemucca, NV. They chose to settle here in Winnemucca because of the Doctors love of rock hounding which they spent most of their days off doing.

She worked for NASA Aerospace, Department of the Interior, Department of Agriculture and managed her husband’s medical office here in Winnemucca, NV.

She loved knitting, sewing, and painting. Dottie belonged to the local Baptist Church and enjoyed visiting with friends at the services until her vision started failing.

Dottie is survived by three of her children James “Jim” (Jeannie) Sykes of Winnemucca, NV; Frank “Joe” (Lynn) Sykes of California and Anita D. Gibson of Portland, Oregon. She also had 15 grandchildren- Heather Gibson of Portland OR, Melody Gibson of Portland OR, Ariel (Michael) Smith of Casper WY , Christopher (Juliann) Moore of Portland OR, Jeremy (Suzanne) Moore of Pendleton OR , Angeline (Zak) Williams of Lexington OR, Hepzibah Sykes-Ray of Portland OR, Hannah (Eric) Howard of Sherwood OR, Emilie Sykes of Pendleton OR, Samuel Sykes of Eugene OR, Frank (Cassie) Sykes of Prineville OR, Rhonda Sykes of Winnemucca NV, James (Onna) Sykes II of Winnemucca NV, James (Staci) Overton of Stanfield OR, Michael (Samantha) Overton of Winnemucca NV.

She had 21 Great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded by her Husband, Dr. Frank J. Sykes, her daughter, Teresa “Teri” and a grand-daughter Rachel.

The family would like to thank Dr. Li and his office staff for their care and especially the Home Health group of Nurses and CNA’s who made the last few months so much easier with their help.
