High school football teams in Nevada have been practicing for the last week and half and now its time for the rest of fall sports to jump in.

Volleyball, soccer, girls golf and boys and girls cross country are all underway in Lander County and the rest of Nevada.

The Battle Mountain High School JV football team will see the first action when on Thursday when it hosts the Elko JV at 7 p.m. at Tim Knight Field.

The varsity Longhorns will have to wait to get on the field for the first time, when they travel to Las Vegas on Friday, Sept. 2, to play The Meadows at 7 p.m. Battle Mountain will be back on the road on Sept. 9 to play Wendell, Idaho.

Battle Mountain makes its home debut on Friday, Sept. 16, against Silver Stage at 7 p.m. This year's Homecoming game is Friday, Sept. 23, against American Falls, Idaho.

Battle Mountain hits the road for three straight road games against Yerington (Sept. 30), Pershing County (Oct. 7) and West Wendover (Oct. 14).

Yerington is the three-time defending 2A champion. Pershing County knocked Battle Mountain out of the playoffs last year.

The regular season concludes with league home games versus Incline (Oct. 21) and White Pine (Oct. 28). Yerington, Pershing County and Battle Mountain should once again vie for the top spot in the Northern 2A.

The Battle Mountain volleyball is under the direction of a new coach in Sondra Togrerson. The Lady Longhorns will look to improve after an off year a season ago.

Torgerson coached the team in 2014.

Battle Mountain travels to Ely for a two-day tournament this weekend to begin the year. The Lady Longhorns host their annual invitational on Sept. 2-3.

Battle Mountain starts Northern 2A play with a road trip to North Tahoe (Sept. 9) and Incline (Sept. 10). The Lady Longhorns will follow with five home matches in a row. The squad closes out the regular season at home against Pershing County on Oct. 27.

The top four teams in the regular season standings qualify for the regional tournament.

The Battle Mountain boys and girls soccer teams begin their run to the playoffs with the Spring Creek Invitational on Aug. 26-27. The Longhorns are back on the road Sept. 2-3 in Ely at White Pine High School.

Due to a change in the schedule and switching sites with Yerington and Whittell, Battle Mountain will make its home debut during Homecoming week. The girls take on Pershing County on Sept. 21, while the boys play the Elko JV.

It will be a new-look soccer league as well with the 2A and 3A combining. Battle Mountain will be part of a league with West Wendover, White Pine, Pershing County (girls only), Yerington, Whittell, Fernley and Dayton. That division will get three playoff teams for the regional championships.

Spring Creek, Elko, Lowry, Churchill County, Sparks, South Tahoe, Truckee, North Tahoe and Incline make up the other division. That group will get five playoff teams.

The 3A regional tournament will be held in Winnemucca, with first round action on Thursday, Nov. 3. The semifinals take place Friday, Nov. 4, and the championship games will take place Saturday, Nov. 5.

The state championships are Nov. 13-14 at a site to be determined.

The Battle Mountain girls golf team starts its season on Thursday, Sept. 1, in Ely at White Pine Golf Course. The Lady Longhorns will also make trips to Wells, West Wendover, Elko and Round Mountain. Battle Mountain will host the 2A on Thursday, Sept. 29

There is no 2A regional championship, with teams moving straight to the state tournament, which will be held Oct. 11-12 in Incline. Last year, Battle Mountain finished third at the state championships.
