GERLACH — Friends of Black Rock- High Rock is proud to host our annual Perseid Meteor Shower Campout on the Black Rock Desert playa Friday, Aug. 12 – Sunday, Aug. 14.
Join the group for a fun and informative weekend filled with good food and good people while enjoying the beauty of the Perseid Meteor Shower.
“The Perseid meteor shower will burst into light this August as Earth passes through the long trail left by Comet Swift-Tuttle — and this year, it’s slated to put on a spectacular show. Here’s how and when to see the Perseids. According to NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke, the Perseids are perhaps the most popular meteor shower of the year. They will be in ‘outburst’ in 2016, which means they’ll appear at double the usual rates” reports Sarah Lewin, Space.com.
As this is a weekend campout event, campers are expected to bring any and all materials they may need, including food.
On Saturday, the Friends of the Black Rock-High Rock will have a tour from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. This year, they will lead campers to Petrified Canyon off of Soldier Meadows Road, leaving from our campsite.
Friends will also be hosting a Membership BBQ Saturday evening. For more information, to volunteer, or RSVP for this event, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@blackrockdesert.org.
