The Battle Mountain High School track and field team traveled to Elko to compete in the Wells Ward Coates Invitational on Friday, April 15.
In the cold and snowy conditions, the boys team won the meet with 174 points. The girls finished in seventh with 31 points. The teams finished with 24 career bests and 11 season bests.
Blake Dorian continues to be one of the leaders for the Longhorns. He won three of his four events and finished second in the other event. Dorian earned top honors in the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 6 inches and the long jump with a mark of at 18-8.
Dorian won the 200 meters with a season-best time of 24.90 seconds, beating out teammate Andrew Cox from a different heat by just .03 of a second. Coaches thought he won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.86, but the results showed he was beat by an Elko athlete from a different heat.
Cox also had a great day, winning both the 400 meters with a career-best time of 54.12 and the high jump at 5-8. He was second in both the triple jump at 37-5 (season best) and the 200 meters at 24.93.
“Andrew and Blake continue to push each other in their events and that is great as we are getting closer to zone,” said BMHS coach Stephanie Potter.
DJ Potter continues to lead a strong throwing crew for the Longhorns. He won the discus with a career best toss of 123-4. Potter placed third in the shot put with a throw of 39-2.50. Potter was also the anchor leg in the second-place weightmen relay.
Cameron Thompson Cameron continues to improve in his events. Thompson placed second inn the 300-meter hurdles to lead a 2-4-6 Longhorn finish in the event with a time of 48.15. He finished third in the pole vault with a career-best height of 9-0. He was a part of the second-place 4x100 relay and the third-place 4x400 relay.
The boys 4x100 Relay of Alec Liebhardt, Dakota Chadwick, Thompson and Austin Wilkins ran a time of 49.18 to place second. Cooper Burkhart, Potter, Eddie Morfin and Freshman Trystian Johnson ran a 59.17 to place second in the thrower’s relay to just be edged out at the line by the West !!br0ken!!
Jackie Martin and Samantha Broadway combined with two West Wendover girl throwers to place in the runner-up spot in the girls throwers relay with a time of 66.09.
Ren Avedician had a career-day in the discus with a third-place finish with a throw of 83-9. She also threw the shot put 24-10.50. She is currently third in both events in the Division III North.
Liebhardt placed in all four of his events. He had career bests and earned third-place finishes in both the 100-meter dash at 12.25 and the long jump at 17-2. Liebhardt finished eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.65. He finished the day running the anchor leg in the second-place 4x100 relay.
David Chavez was another Longhorn who placed in all four of his events. Chavez earned a third-place in the 200 meters behind teammates Dorian and Cox with a time of 25.46. He was fourth in the 100-meter dash behind teammates Dorian and Liebhardt with a season-best time of 12.34. Chavez ran in the third-place 4x800 Relay and the fourth-place 4x200 relay.
The girls 4x100 relay of LaRae Tomera, Justine Jury, Sammi Wilson and Liliana Chavez ran a season-best 59.31 for third place. The boys 4x400 relay of Saul Miramontes, Thompson, DeAndre Powell and Daimean Diaz earned a third-place finish with a time of 4:08.38. The boys 4x800 relay of David Chavez, Fabian Castenada, Powell and Diaz ran a season best 9:26.78 to place third.
Morfin had two career bests and placed in both of the throwing events. He was fourth in the discus with a toss of 113-6.50, a five-foot improvement. He placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 38-3. He also was part of the second-place throwers relay.
Eddie continues to improve and is in the top 10 in Division III for both events,” added the coach.
Tristin Cordingley has done a great job of learning the hurdles as a freshman and his efforts are showing up on the track. He earned a fourth-place in the 110-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 21.71. He placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with another career-best time of 53.47. The times place him in the Top 10 on the state Division III list.
Wilkins attempted the 300-meter hurdles and placed fourth with a time of 52.72. He also ran the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.56 and he finished the day running in the second-place 4x100 relay and the fourth-place 4x200 relay.
The girls 4x400 Relay of Lizzi Sadler, Alexa Goddard, Maddie Wahrenburg and Cheyenne Brock finished fourth with a time of 5:45.93. The girls 4x800 relay of Sadler, Wilson, Paige Ripley and Cheyenne Brock placed fourth at 13:23. The boys 4x200 Relay of David Chavez, Miramontes, Powell and Wilkins finished fourth at 1:45.24.
Powell had a career-best time of 26.14 in the 200 meters to place fifth. He also ran in the third-place 4x400 and 4x800 relays and the fourth-place 4x200 relay.
Castenada placed fifth in the pole vault with a height of 7-6. He also ran the lead-off leg in the third-place 4x800 relay. Liliana Chavez continues to be consistent in the triple jump with a sixth-place distance of 27-6. She was also part of the third-place 4x100 relay and the sixth-place 4x200 relay.
The girls 4x200 relay of Lizzi Sadler, Skotti Torrence, Kandise Baird and Liliana Chavez was sixth in a time of 2:16.08.
Burkhart finished eighth in the shot put with a career-best throw of 35-9, improving by 1.5 feet. He also threw the Discus 76-6.50. Wilson earned an eight-place in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 32.33. She was part of the third-place 4x100 relay and the fourth-place 4x800 relay.
Ripley continues to be consistent in the 400 meters, placing eight with a time of 75.78. She ran a season best in the 200 meters with a time of 34.24. She finished the day running in the fourth-place 4x800 relay.
In other performances, Sadler ran the 800 meters in 3:39.21, Tomera stopped the watch at 15.27 in the 100 meters and 15.27 in the 200 meters and Torrence had a time of 84.53 in the 400 meters. Wahrenburg ran the 1,600 meters in a time of 7:49.50, Schelbe Hall had times of 16.81 (100 meters) and 35.34 (200 meters) and Brock ran the 400 meters in 79.94 and she had a mark of 4-2 in the high jump.
Tovar tossed the discus 92-2 and the shot put 32-1, while Broadway had throws of 23-11 (shot put) and 59-4.75 (discus). Chadwick had a time of 13.00 in the 100 meters and 26.98 in the 200 meters, Jury ran the 200 meters at 33.52 and had a mark of 4-0 in the high jump.
Hania Amezcua had a leap of 10-4 in the long jump, Goddard cleared 4-0 in the high jump, Kandise Baird had a leap of 10-4 in the long jump and Miramontes had a time of 28.52 in the 200 meters.
Jackie Martin had throws of 18-11 (shot put) and 52-5.75 (discus), Shylo Burkhart tossed the shot put 24-3 and discus (60-7) and Cassie Eusebian had a throw of 18-11 in the shot out and 55-3.50 in the discus.
Jasmine Lopez threw the shot put 21-11 and discus 59-16, Adrienne Burkhart had throws of 11-11 (shot put) and 32.0.50 (discus) and Trystian Johnson threw the discus 85-2 and the shot put 27-5.
Battle Mountain travels to Winnemucca on Saturday for the Lowry Invitational at 9 a.m.
