The Battle Mountain High School track and field team traveled to Elko on Saturday, April 9, to compete in the 43rd Elko Kiwanis Invitational Meet.
The boys finished in fourth-place with 65 points behind Elko, Spring Creek and Pershing County. The Lady Longhorns finished in 11th with five points. The teams combined for 27 career bests and 14 season bests.
“We were missing some athletes due to a band and choir trip so we have not seen our full team at any of the meets so far this season,” said BMHS coach Stephanie Potter. “The senior boys still continue to lead the way for the Longhorns.”
Senior Blake Dorian had a great day and placed in all four of his events. He earned a silver medal in the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, 5 inches, just three inches behind Marcus Nester from Pershing County.
Dorian had a strong 100-meter dash race, just edging a great sprinter from Tonopah to earn bronze medal in a season-best time of 11.55 seconds. Two Elko runners earned first and second, respectively.
Dorian struggled a bit in the long jump with a fifth-place leap of 17-8. He finished the day running the anchor leg in the bronze medal 4x200 relay. Dorian is ranked No. 2 in the triple jump and fifth in both the long Jump and 100 meters for Division III.
The boys 4x200 relay of Dorian, Andrew Cox, Alec Liebhardt and DeAndre Powell earned a third-place finish with a season-best time of 1:38. The boys 4x400 relay of David Chavez, Saul Miramontes, Fabian Castenada and Powell earned a bronze medal in a season-best time of 3:59.
Cox, a senior, turned in a strong performance and placed in all four of his events. Cox finished fourth in the high jump, just missing a medal by too many misses, with a career-best by four inches at 5-10. This moves him to second on the Division III list. Cox earned a fifth-place in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 37-9.
He was eighth in the 200 meters with a career-best time of 24.28. He is ranked fifth in both the triple jump and 200 meters. Cox finished the day running the lead-off leg in the 4x200 relay.
Senior DJ Potter just missed medaling in the discus earning with a fourth-place throw of 119-9. Second through fourth place was separated by six inches. He was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 39-7. He is still ranked second on the State Division III list .
The boys 4x100 relay of Liebhardt, Chavez, Cameron Thompson, and Austin Wilkins ran a season-best time of 48.06 to place fifth. The 4x200 relay was the only girls to place in Elko. Justine Jury, Samantha Broadway and Sammi Wilson and Liliana Chavez were sixth with a season-best time 2:03.
Chavez earned a sixth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 49.87. This time places him eighth on the Division III list. Chavez also ran the anchor leg in the bronze medal 4x400 relay.
Liebhardt placed seventh in the long jump with a career-best leap of 16-7. He also had a career-best in the 200 meters with a time of 25.40. Liebhardt finished the day running in the bronze medal 4x200 relay and the fifth-place 4x100 relay.
Castenada had a great race in the 400 meters to place seventh in a career-best time of 56.41. That time places him 10th on the Division III list. He also had another career-best in the pole vault with a height of 8-0 to finish seventh. Eddie Morfin made finals in the shot put and ended up in eighth-place with a throw of 36-0.50.
In other performances, Ren Avedician ran the 100 meters in 15.00 and had throws of 73-5 in the discus and 23-7.50 in the shot put. Cooper Burhart had a career-best toss pf 34-4 in the shot put and 82-8.50 in the discus. Sarah Mills had a time of 22.27 in the 100-meter hurdles and Lizzi Sadler ran the 200 meters at 33.97 and the 1,600 meters in a time of 8:12. She made a 19-second improvement in the 1,600.
Tovar had throws of 88-8.50 in the discus and 21-1.50 in the shot put, Broadway had a time of 18.59 in the 100 meters to go with throws of 22-5 (shot put) and 55-5 (discus). Jury and Wilson had times of 14.93 and 15.00, respectively, in the 100 meters and Saul Miramontes stopped the watch at 63.24 in the 400 meters.
Hania Amezcua recorded a time of 16.06 in the 100 meters and a leap of 10-0 in the long jump, Kandise Bird had times of 16.06 (100 meters) and 8:18 (1,600 meters) and Shylo Burkhart had throws of 68-5 (discus) and 24-6 (shot put).
Esma Cheno tossed the shot put 20-4 and discus 67-8, while Cassie Eusebio had throws of 18-11.50 (shot put) and 54-2 (discus).
Hailey Goodman has a time of 16.88 in the 100 meters and 8:26 in the 1,600 meters and Schelbe Hall ran the 100 meters at 18.34 and the 200 meters at 34.90. Wilkins timed in at 12.09 in the 100 meters and 25.58 in the 200 meters and Chavez had times of 14.65 (100 meters) and 29.78 (200 meters) to go with a mark of 28-0 in the triple jump.
Thompson cleared 8-0 in the pole vault, Wahrenburg had a time of 17:56 in the 3,200 meters and Daniela Ross had a time of 16.99 (100meters) and 1:32.22 (400 meters). Adriane Burkahet had a throw of 12-2 in the shot put and 25-9 in the discus and Jasmine Lopez had tosses of 18-9 (shot put) and 55-8 (discus).
Battle Mountain was in Elko for the Wells Ward Coates Invitational on Friday. Results were not available at press time. The Longhorns are in Eureka on Friday starting at 9:30 a.m.
