Obituary: Velma Marie Laucirica Martin

Velma passed away March 30. 2016. Born on November 7, 1943, she was a lifelong resident of Winnemucca, Nevada. She attended Winnemucca Grammar School, Humboldt County High School and Beauty College in Nampa, Idaho.

Velma married Morgan Martin in 1966. She raised three children, Debra (Mike) Novosel, Brenda Willey and Julio Martin.

She owned and operated her own beauty salon, worked at a local truck stop, and worked in dietary at Humboldt General Hospital for over 17 years before retiring. Upon retirement she took great pride and joy in attending all of her grandchildren, Whitney Willey and Dylan Martins, events. She had a humble and kind heart and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was a lifelong member of the Winnemucca Basque Club in which her father Julio was the first president. She volunteered many hours to the Basque Club, Miss Winnemucca Scholarship Program, Miss Nevada Organization, Cinderella Scholarship Program, Saint Paul’s Catholic Church as a catechist teacher, and ran the calk walk annually at the St. Patrick’s Day Fair. Velma enjoyed the flowers in her yard, bowling, yard sales and playing cards.

Velma is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, niece Ann Zugazaga (Jesse) Anderson, great niece Alexis Smith and sister Loraine Laucirica. She was preceded in death by her parents, Julio and Dominica Laucirica, nephew Bob Smith and two sisters Sylvia Smith and Linda Zugazaga.

Mass of Christian Burial was on April 2nd at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, officiated by Deacon Dennis Cahill, with Honorary Pall Bearers Lyle Avey, Rally Lara, Jerry Marcuerquiaga, Julio Martin, Mike Novosel, Craig Reynolds, Buck Martin and David Ellis.
