Obituary: Robert “Jake” Thomas Jacobson

“God’s got this.”

Robert “Jake” Thomas Jacobson, age 41, passed away, surrounded by loved-ones, after a lengthy battle with cancer on March 31, 2016.

Jake gave those around him the courage to move forward. The family motto, “One step at a time”, and the phrase he repeated as his illness worsened, “God’s got this”, were a comfort to his wife and children at the end of Jake’s journey.

Jake was born in Sterling, Colorado on January 4th, 1975. His family moved to Sterling, Oklahoma, were he attended Sterling High School. Directly afterward, Jake joined the US Marine Corps, where he met his wife, Patricia, and served in Iraq. Jake was an aviation ordnanceman in the USMC, and thoroughly enjoyed the work. He found a similar joy in his work in drilling and blasting for the mines.

Jake married Patricia in Oak Harbor, Washington, on November 10, 1998. Their care for each other blossomed into a beautiful family, and the two had three children. Jake was immensely proud of the family he built with Patricia.

Jake will be remembered as a boisterous man with a generous spirit. “He never knew a stranger,” said his sister, Roxie. He would give whatever he could to those who needed help.

Jake grew to deeply love Winnemucca, and the community here. He was involved in local theater, in the local Church of Latter-Day Saints, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Boy Scouts. In addition, Jake had many hobbies, which included: regular games of Dungeons and Dragons with friends, legos, leather-working and doing crafts with his family. He could also be seen regularly at Club 40, where he loved to dance and sing karaoke.

Jake is survived by his loving wife Patricia and their three children, Rebecca, Cynthia and Robert, his parents, Tom and Roxanne Jacobson, and his sister, Roxie Jacobson. He is preceded in death by his grandparents Margrette Andersen, Bob Andersen, Edwin Jacobson and Helen Jacobson, his aunt Doris Jacobson and his uncle Ted Jacobson.

As one of his final requests, Jake suggested that those who wish to send flowers instead send houseplants. He told his wife that as she took care of the plants, she might be reminded of him and how much he loved their family. Alternately, donations might be made to White Sage Theater, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, or the Church of Latter Day Saints.

Services for Jake were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 3105 Mary Way, April 6th, 2016. Jake will be laid to rest in a tree-planting ceremony to be announced at a later date. Contact Patricia for details at 304-9434.
