After losing three games at Yerington, the Battle Mountain High School softball team got back on the winning track with a three game sweep of North Tahoe in Tahoe City, Calif., last weekend.
The Lady Longhorns claimed the opener of Friday 13-2 and swept the doubleheader on Saturday 16-0 and 14-0. Battle Mountain is 3-3 in the Division III North and 7-7 overall.
BMHS cruises past Lakers
Battle Mountain dominated from the start on Friday afternoon, scoring in each inning to win by the mercy rule in five innings. The Lady Longhorns scored three times in the opening inning and two more in the second. After scoring a single run in the third inning, Battle Mountain broke open the contest with six runs in the fourth inning to lead 12-0.
North Tahoe plated its two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but was not enough in the comeback.
Kylie Sondermann earned the win in the circle in the complete-game effort. The senior allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
Liscet Diaz and Isabella DeAllah combined for five of the 12 RBIs by the Lady Longhorns. Battle Mountain was aided by 14 walks by North Tahoe pitching.
Jones no-hits North Tahoe
The first game on Saturday belonged to junior McKenna Jones threw a no-hitter in the 16-0 run. She struck out six and walked just two in the five inning, complete-game effort.
The contest was all but over after the first inning after Battle Mountain took a 5-0 lead. The Longhorns added three runs in the second and fourth innings, with four runs in between in the third inning, Once again, the game ended in the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Kali Kester was 4-for-4 with three triples. She drove in two runs and scored four. Riane Schroeder was 3-for-4 with a triple and a RBI. Sondermann added three hits to go with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Jones and Diaz added two hits, while Julia Ramirez, Yulissa Vazquez, Marissa Rogers, Sarah Berumen and DeAllah had one hit each. In all, Battle Mountain pounded out 19 hits.
BMHS finishes road sweep
Battle Mountain finished the weekend in style with another shutout. The Lady Longhorns scored in just two innings but made it count. Battle Mountain scored nine times in the second inning and added five runs in the fifth.
Kester and Schroeder each and two hits and combined to score four runs and three RBI. Jonni Davis finished with a hit, three RBI and two runs scored and Sondermann and Rogers each had a hit.
Sondermann collected her second win of the weekend in the complete-game effort. She struck out three, walked one, while allowing three hits.
Battle Mountain is currently fourth in the Division III standings and is in line for the final playoff spot. Pershing County leads the league at 6-0. Yerington is second at 5-1 and West Wendover (2-2) is third. West Wendover is the only team to beat Yerington.
Battle Mountain will have an opportunity to move up in the standings this weekend when it hosts West Wendover. The opening game of the series is Friday at 4 p.m. The two schools play a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m.
