CARSON CITY — A college scholarship giveaway for those with kids 13 and younger closes Sept. 30. By providing 20 $529 scholarships, the giveaway aims to publicize 529 plan college savings plans administered by the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office.
A 529 plan college savings account is a tax-advantaged way of saving for college or vocational training. Such plans are managed by colleges or states. They are set up for a designated beneficiary, typically a child or grandchild.
Dan Schwartz, Nevada state treasurer, said, “Students with a college savings account are between six and seven times more likely to attend college.”
No taxpayer dollars are used to fund the contest, according to Schwartz. Rather, awards are funded from a portion of program management fees.
Plans offered by the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office include the Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program, Nevada College Kick Start, SSGA Upromise 529 Plan, Putnam 529 for America, the Vanguard 529 Plan and the USAA 529 College Savings Plan.
