For much of the season, the Battle Mountain High School girls golf team has been looking up at West Wendover in the standings. That changed this past Thursday, as the Lady Longhorns had the opportunity to play on their home course.
Battle Mountain took advantage of the home cooking and came with its first win of the season with a score of 431. The Elko JV was second at 446 and West Wendover (454) placed third. Wells, which had the top two individual finishers, did not have enough players for a team score.
“It was a great day for us,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “We are improving every day, and this was our best score of the year. West Wendover has been beating us all year, and it was nice to get ahead of them.”
The Leopards’ Kristen Alton (84) and Kaitlyn Alton (89) were first and second, respectively. They were the only two golfers for Wells.
Battle Mountain’s Kylee Squires (93) was third and Kennedie Davis shot a 102 to finish sixth for the Lady Longhorns.
“Kylee has been playing consistent for us,” said the coach. “She had a nice round today, and so did Kennedie.”
Kali Kester, playing golf for the first time this season, shot a career-best 111, which was 27 strokes better than the week before. Lynzee Devlin rounded out the scores for the Lady Longhorns at 125.
“This is the first year for Kali and Lynzee to be playing high school golf,” Tremayne said. “That was a great round for Kali. We need to take the momentum from here and continue to get better. There are opportunities out there for them to take off five to 10 strokes.”
There will be no regional tournament this year for the Division III/IV due to the lack of full teams. All eligible teams and players will compete at the state tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and Thursday, Oct. 8, at White Pine County Golf Course in Ely.
“Incline will be the team to beat at state,” Tremayne said. “If we can play like we did today and continue to improve, I think a second-place finish at state would be pretty good for us.”
Battle Mountain travels to Round Mountain on Thursday with a 10 a.m. tee time.
