WJHS seventh graders earn two victories over Fallon

Warriors travel to McDermitt on Saturday

The Winnemucca seventh-grade girls basketball ‘A’ team cruised to a 38-10 win on its home floor on Tuesday.

“They played well, were aggressive on both ends of the floor, and were great teammates to each other all game long,” said WJHS coach Grant Beatty.

Maci Delong had 10 points for the Warriors, and Adia Bengochea added eight points.

“She had some great passes to her teammates. She really sees the floor well for a girl her age,” said the coach.

Delaney Thompson and Lilly Landt helped stretch the defense with their long-range shooting. The duo had four and six points, respectively. Beatty noted that Bailey Brinkerhoff played well on both ends of the floor, scoring six points. Gracie Garrett and Mackenzie Begay each had two points and did very well defensively for the Warriors, according to the coach.

The ‘B’ team won a close game in overtime, knocking off Fallon 28-22.

The Warriors were led by Brinkerhoff’s 10 points, including six in overtime. Leslie Martinez scored eight points, blocked a ton of shots, and was a strong defensive presence inside, according to the coach. Clarissa Olsen played strong on defense, and with her rebounding, she also made her first baskets of the season, scoring four points.

Beatty added that Alexis Gomez did a great job of pushing the ball and getting Winnemucca into an offense. Julia Ruiz provided a good presence inside with six points in the second quarter.

“They have improved a ton since the start of the season,” Beatty said. “The ‘A’ team cheered ‘em on the whole game.”

Winnemucca travels to McDermitt on Saturday at 9 a.m. for games against Lovelock and McDermitt.

The Warriors then travel to Lovelock on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 9 a.m.
