After the first two tournaments of the girls golf season were decided by one stroke, there appears to be a new frontrunner in the Division I-A North standings.
Lowry High School separated itself from the rest of the field earlier in the week with a pair of victories in Lake Tahoe under tough weather conditions, which included high winds and smoke.
The Lady Bucks were in South Tahoe on Monday at Lake Tahoe Golf Course and won with a score of 384. That easily out-distanced second-place Spring Creek at 427. Elko (430) finished third, and Fernley was fourth.
The Lady Bucks had two players finish in the top three, led by freshman Tatyana Carlson with an 88. Junior Elise Rose, playing in her first tournament of the season, was third overall at 90.
The schools had an early wake-up call on Tuesday to play The Resort at Squaw Creek Course in Truckee.
The scores were some of the highest all year, but Lowry was able to come out on top for the third time in four tries this year.
The Lady Bucks shot 412, to beat Elko (434) by 22 strokes. Spring Creek placed third at 459 and Fernley (482) was fourth. Churchill County and Dayton tied for fifth at 537 and South Tahoe (546) was seventh. Truckee did not record a team score.
Two Lowry veterans led the way, as Rose was second overall with a round of 90 and Brooklyn Backus (102) was third. Fernley’s Brittany Evans was the low medalist at 86.
Carlson and Savanna Cox each shot 110 and Kaity Sample and Veronica Jones had rounds of 123.
In the race for the regional championship, Lowry has taken a three-point lead over Elko. Spring Creek is third and Fernley fourth. The Division I-A North doesn’t have a postseason tournament, and the three state tournament bids are determined by the final regular season standings.
Lowry is back on the course on Wednesday at the Arnold Palmer-designed Dayton Valley Country Club. The league will play in Fallon on Thursday.
