Lady Bulldogs start Division IV East season on a high note

After playing two tough non-conference matches to start the year, the McDermitt High School volleyball team found its way to the winning side at the best possible moment.

The Lady Bulldogs played host to Carlin last Saturday in the Division IV East opener, and came away with a 25-15, 25-19 and 25-19 victory.

“It was a good win for the girls,” said MHS coach Danielle Wilson. “We looked more like an organized varsity volleyball team. We have been working on our setters getting to the ball and cutting back on the free points we were giving up.”

McDermitt finished with 31 kills on the day, led by Lydia Northrup with eight. Adrie Smart added six kills and Precious Masters and Va Draunidalo had five each. Dacey Horn had four kills to go with 12 assists and Andrea Smart had two kills.

“Va and Lydia had a good hitting game on Saturday,” Wilson said. “With our change in setters we are hoping the connection is made so Va can kill it on every set.”

Carlin had trouble with the McDermitt serve, as the Lady Bulldogs racked up 39 aces in just three sets. Draunidalo, Northrup and Masters had seven aces apiece. Adrie Smart and Andrea Smart had six aces each.

Megan Sam had a team-high 13 assists and Horn and Masters each had a block.

Prior to the league-opener, McDermitt traveled to Jordan Valley, Ore. The Mustangs defeated the Lady Bulldogs 25-20, 25-17 and 25-23.

McDermitt has a pair of league matches this weekend, starting at home today against Jackpot at 3 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs hit the road on Saturday to play Wells at 1 p.m.

“We are starting to work together as a team, and recognize weaknesses and

exploit our strengths,” Wilson said.
