If early indications are anything, the Lowry High School volleyball team could be in store for another strong season.
The Lady Bucks were among 19 other schools from around Nevada and California top take part in the Yerington Invitational this past weekend.
Lowry went 5-2 over the two days, suffering both losses on Saturday.
“It was a good weekend for us,” said LHS coach Megan Allen. “We got tired near the end of the tournament. We learned some things and what we need to work on and got some wins out of it.”
Lowry had little trouble in pool play on Friday, Aug. 28, defeating Silver Stage, Coleville, Calif., and Sparks in two sets.
“It was a good day for the younger girls to get a lot of playing time,” Allen said. “We were in one of the easiest pools on the first day. But, that is good because I was able to do some different stuff with the girls. It is hard to stay motivated and enthusiastic in those kind of matches.”
The three victories put the Lady Bucks into the Gold Bracket on Saturday, where Lowry opened with a 25-18 and 25-23 win over Mammoth, Calif. Lowry next met up with Spanish Springs of the Division I North. Last year, the Lady Bucks beat the Cougars in the tournament. This time, Spanish Springs came out on top 25-22 and 25-14.
“It’s a match that we probably could have won,” Allen said. “It was a lot of back-and-forth point scoring.”
Lowry scored a 25-13 and 25-12 win over Portola, Calif., but lost 21-25, 26-24 and 15-10 to Dayton, who finished second in the tournament to Yerington.
“It was a good match with them and I wasn’t surprised,” said the coach. “They have their old coach back and have some new players. We will see them later in the year.”
Lowry heads back out on the road this weekend for the High Sierra Invitational in Reno, hosted by Galena High School. Forty teams from around California and Nevada are scheduled to compete.
Lowry plays Damonte Ranch on Friday t 2 p.m., Hilmar, Calif., at 3 p.m. and Reed at 5 p.m. all at Galena High School.
The Lady Buckar are gauranteed at least four matches on Saturday.
“This will be a great tournament for us,” Allen said. “I am not worried about wins and losses. If we win a couple matches that will be great. This will be some of the best competition we will see all year. I want the girls to see how other teams play and learn from that.”
