Photography symposium offers scholarships

Aspiring high school photographers asked to enter

Shooting the West, the premier photography experience held annually in Winnemucca, is offering aspiring high school students the opportunity to apply for a $300 scholarship for future Shooting the West events. Two high school students from Humboldt, Lander and Pershing counties who show an interest in photography as a future profession or hobby will be able to enrich their knowledge by attending workshops and/or the Friday-Saturday Symposium through the generous donation of Bill and Debbie Origer of Albany, Ore., Shooting the West and Shooting the Fair participants.

Created almost 28 years ago by renowned, local photographer Linda Dufurrena and the late Sheri Allen, the event brings world-class photographers to Winnemucca for a week-long learning experience with students of all ages, walks of life, and levels of photographic experience and interests.

The Origers know firsthand the contribution that knowledge, learning and encouragement can make to one starting out in photography. “STW is a friendly place to learn and share our passion for photography. We want to give back and support this event,” said Bill and Debbie.

“You are never too old to learn or too young to start,” adds Brenda Heintz, STW’s executive director. “This is going to be a wonderful opportunity for two lucky young photographers to learn new techniques and to meet others who share their passion.”

Students must be from 14 – 18 years of age and currently attending their local high school or show proof of enrollment in an alternative school or home schooling. Applications for the 2015-16 Shooting the West Scholarship for Aspiring High School Photographers can be downloaded from the website www.shootingthewest.org beginning Oct. 30. Completed applications will be accepted from Nov. 2 through Jan. 4, 2016, with the winners being notified in time for Shooting the West registration, which opens Jan. 18, at 6 a.m., for the event being held April 25 — May 1, 2016.
