Lowry picks up two ties, drops match in final seconds in Tahoe

Anytime the Lowry High School boys soccer team takes on Spring Creek, it is going to be a fierce battle. There is no love lost between the two schools, and that was no different on Wednesday night in Winnemucca.

Physical play and defense was at a premium on the night, as the contest finished in a 0-0 tie.

“It was just a typical Lowry and Spring Creek game,” said LHS coach Steve Swanson. “It was a physical game, but a fair one. They played rough, we played rough, and I am OK with that. Right now, our problem is that we can’t get the ball in the net.”

Both teams had their opportunities, but scoring chances were few and far between. Sergio Lopez had a handful of saves, when he was challenged in the net.

“This was not the same team we played a few weeks ago,” Swanson said. “They are very much improved. The tie really doesn’t hurt us in the standings. We are pretty much locked into our spot.”

Lowry falls to

South Tahoe

The Buckaroos hit the road last week for two matches, starting on Friday, Oct. 15, in South Tahoe. When the two teams played the first time this year, it resulted in a 3-3 tie.

The two squads had to deal with a rain storm for much of the match, which kept the scoring down. The only goal of the night came in the 80th minute on a shot by Martin Jimenez that glanced off the hands of Buckaroo goalie Sergio Lopez.

A Vikings free kick from near midfield resulted in a loose ball that fell to Jimenez 35 yards from goal. The senior dribbled by two Buckaroos defenders and fired a shot that skipped off the turf.

“It was a good soccer match,” Swanson said. “I don’t think the weather played a role in the game. They scored on a nice shot, you have to give them credit. It was in extra time. We got the ball back off the kickoff and moved down the field before the whistle blew.”

Lowry ties Dayton

The Buckaroos were back on the field a day later in a rainy and cold Dayton. Lowry had trouble getting going on the day, and was able to secure a tie late in the match.

“We struggled the entire match,” Swanson said. “We could not get going. We spent so much energy the day before, and had nothing left. We were fortunate to get the tie. You have to give credit to Dayton. They played well.”

Dayton took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jaime Avila. Lowry came back to tie match, when two Dayton defenders misplayed the ball. The Dust Devils went back up 2-1 on a shot by Javier Coronado. The Buckaroos’ second goal came on a shot that slipped through the fingers of the Dayton goalie.

Lowry stands in fifth place at 5-5-3 in league play and 6-7-3 overall. The Buckaroos can clinch a playoff spot with one more win or a Dayton loss. As of now, Lowry would play Truckee in the regional playoffs.

Lowry travels to Elko on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match with the Indians.
