With just a handful of weeks left in the season, the injuries are adding up for the Lowry High School football team.
The Buckaroos made their final road trip of the season on Friday at Sparks, with a number of starters out of the lineup. They were defeated 44-14 by the Railroaders.
Early mistakes cost Lowry, as Sparks scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone. The Railroaders converted six touchdowns on their first eight drives. Three of the drives lasted just one play.
Sparks jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 65-yard run by Hunter O’Meara, after Lowry turned the ball over on downs. Sparks quarterback Sylis Sanchez added two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter, the last coming on a 36-yard run to give the Railroaders a 28-0 advantage at halftime.
The Railroaders extended the margin to 30-0 in the third quarter on a safety, and after a Buckaroo fumble, Nick Van Patten went around the corner and down the sideline for a 37-0 lead on a 34-yard run.
Sparks increased the margin to 44-0, and had a chance to make the game a running clock, but fumbled on the Buckaroo 5-yard line.
Moments later, Nate Nelson gave the Lowry offense a spark, as he found his way through the Sparks defense and scored on a 95-yard touchdown run.
The defense stepped up minutes later for the Buckaroos, when Chris Karchella stripped a Sparks running back of the ball and scampered 40 yards for a touchdown and the final points of the night.
With the loss, Lowry dropped to 1-6 in the Division I-A North, and 1-6 overall.
The Buckaroos are back home on Friday night to play Spring Creek at 7 p.m.
