With the Northern I-A regional title wrapped up, the Lowry High School girls golf team saved its best for last.
The Lady Bucks shot a season-best 370 this past Thursday in Fernley to win the last seven tournaments played in the league. Elko was second at 387, Fernley was fourth at 398 and Spring Creek (400) finished fourth. Lowry, Elko and Spring Creek advance to the state championships this week in Boulder City.
“The girls showed up and it was nice,” said LHS coach Todd Milton. “They struggled a little bit on the front nine, but bounced back on the final nine holes. It’s nice to see us finishing up the season on a strong note. It has been a great year. It wouldn’t say it has exceeded my expectations, but I didn’t think we would dominate the our league like we did.”
Lowry was the only school to place three golfers on the all-league, first team.
The Lady Bucks had three of the top six averages in the league, led by freshman Tatyana Carlson in third with an 87.66. She carded an 83 in Fernley to finish third overall.
Teammate Elise Rose was fourth in the average at 90.5, and she shot 96 in Fernley.
Fellow junior Brooklyn Backus placed sixth in the average at 94, and she ended the regular season with a round of 95.
“That is a great accomplishment to have,” Milton said. “They have played well all season. Almost half the all-league team is our players.”
Fernley’s Brittany Evans was crowned the Player of the Year, and she was the low medalist on Thursday with a 72. Spring Creek’s Mikal Jerman and Elko’s Chalee Mullin and Brooke Elquist were also named to the first team.
Savanna Cox earned her way onto the all-league, second team with an average of 98. The junior shot her best round of the season in Fernley, with a 96.
Fernley’s Courtney Dunn, Spring Creek’s Ashlyn Hebdon, Dayton’s Kassandra Acosta, Elko’s Sarah Sarbacker and Churchill County’s Sarah Evans were named to the second team.
The Lady Bucks’ Kaity Sample and Veronica Jones finished the year on a high, placing 15th and 18th in the average at 106 and 110, respectively. Jones shot 103 in Fernley and Sample 106.
“It has been an all-round good season,” said the coach. “If we had one player have trouble, another one stepped up. It has been a complete team effort this year.”
Lowry will make the long trip to Boulder City for the NIAA Division I-A State Championships on Wednesday and Thursday. First round tee times can be found at www.niaa.com.
Faith Lutheran won the Division I-A South regional with a 310, as Morgan Goldstein and Sydney Smith both had rounds of even-par 72. Clark was second at 385, and Boulder City was third at 403.
“To be realistic, Faith Lutheran is the team to beat,” Milton said. “I am going to tell the girls to go play their game and not worry about it. Five of them have been here before and know what to expect. Our goal is to go out there and see if we can finish second. If we can do that, I would be very happy. It is going to be a long week, but I just want them to have fun and not put pressure on them.”
