LHS boys soccer team cruises to 6-1 win over Churchill County

Bucks sit in fifth place in Division I-A North

Late last week something clicked for the Lowry High School boys soccer team, and head coach Steve Swanson hopes that continues.

The Buckaroos won their second game in a row, cruising to a 6-1 victory over Churchill County, last Saturday in Fallon.”

“We scrimmaged our JV and we had an epiphany and we started to pass the ball,” Swanson said. “We went to Fallon and I wanted to see it again and we did it again for much of the first half. Things are going good for us right now, I am pretty stoked.”

Lowry (6-6-1 overall, 5-4-1 Division I-A North) made quick work of Churchill County, scoring four times in the first 20 minutes. The Buckaroos went into cruise control the rest of the way, fitting in a number of subs throughout the match.

Ariano Aguilar had a pair of goals and two assists, while Oscar Galarza moved up from the JV team for the match and scored twice as well. Churchill County did not have a JV team, allowing the freshman to move up for the day.

Ariel Gonzalez and Weston Irons also scored goals for the Buckaroos. Mathew Kepler, Jesus Escobedo and Jordan Diaz had assists.

Lowry hits the road for two matches this weekend, starting today in South Tahoe at 4 p.m.

When the two teams met in Winnemucca earlier in the year, they played to a 3-3 tie. The Vikings have not lost in Division I-A North play this year. They have won five games and tied five games.

The Buckaroos travel to Dayton on Saturday for a noon start.

Lowry is currently fifth in the league standings with 16 points. Spring Creek is sixth with 10.

The top six teams reach the playoffs. If the regional tournament were to to start today, Lowry would play Truckee and South Tahoe would face Spring Creek in the opening round.

“I have very high expectations for the South Tahoe game,” Swanson said. “I think we have a chance to beat them or give them a hell of a game. The one advantage they have is the altitude and that kicks our butt.”
