Buckaroos end four-match losing streak with rout of Vaqueros

After a tough weekend against two of the best teams in Division I-A, the Lowry High School boys soccer team got back on the winning track Wednesday night, with a 4-0 win over Fernley in Winnemucca.

The Buckaroos scored two goals in each half, to end a four-match losing streak and improve to 4-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the Division I-A North.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game, but it was a solid game and the guys played well,” said LHS coach Steve Swanson. “I don’t think Sergio (Lopez) really saw a shot on goal. There might have been a couple through balls, but the defense played awesome. Joe (Mullis) and Brian (Shettler) came back from their injuries. It’s big to have those two on the field, playing defense.”

Ariel Gallardo gave the Buckaroos the only goal they would need, scoring in the sixth minute. Lowry increased the advantage to 2-0 in the 35th on a shot by Ariano Aguilar. The senior hit the corner of the net, as the Fernley goalie came out to make a play, leaving the net open.

It was much of the same in the second half, with Weston Irons scoring in the 52nd minute off a scramble around the net. The Buckaroos closed out the scoring in the 63rd minute, as Aguilar scored his second goal of the night.

“The movement could have been a little better, but we had a ton of shots and chances,” Swanson said. “Fernley’s goalie made some great saves, or it could have been worse. All in all, I was very pleased, and we are going in the right direction.”

Lowry falls to Truckee

While a majority of the teams were in Winnemucca for Homecoming last week, the Buckaroos spent the weekend on the road. Lowry traveled to Truckee on Friday, Oct. 9, and lost 4-1.

Lowry jumped out to the early advantage on a shot by Ariel Gonzalez, but it was all Wolverines after that. Truckee scored the final two goals in the first half, and added two more in the final 40 minutes.

The Buckaroos played without their top defenders in Mullis and Shettler due to injuries.

“We got off to a great start,” added the coach. “Truckee is a good team and with a short bench and two of your best defenders out, it was tough. We had a little moment in the second half, but got back to the hotel that night and had a come to Jesus meeting and worked things out.”

Buckaroos drops road match to Sparks

Lowry finished he road trip in Sparks last Saturday, and lost 3-0, but the coach was happy with the play.

“Our goal going in was to hold them to three goals or less, and get ourselves a goal” Swanson said. “We came out and played great. I couldn’t be more happy with the performance against a good team. It was day and night from Truckee.”

Sparks led 1-0 at halftime and added two goals in the final 40 minutes to account for the final outcome.

Lowry travels to Fallon on Saturday to face Churchill County at noon.
