The Kerak Shrine Center is hosting a free orthopedic referral clinic on Oct. 17 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Battle Mountain General Hospital-sponsored health fair at the Battle Mountain Civic Center.
Hospital clinic Chair Bob Pohlman, of the Kerak Shriners, said the clinic is for children who have been referred by school nurses for scoliosis or whose parents suspect an orthopedic problem.
Pohlman said the Shriners would refer children with problems at the event to Shriners Hospital for Children Salt Lake City.
“We’ve had them come in with six fingers or toes,” he said. “There have been all kinds of problems we’ve referred.”
Children who attend the clinic range from birth to 18 years old. School and health nurses usually provide referrals to the clinic for children they think might be in need.
Orthopedics is a branch of medical science that deals with prevention or correction of disorders involving structures of the body including the skeleton, joints muscles, connective tissue and other supporting structures such as ligaments and cartilage.
Shriners hospitals have also treated children with burns for over 40 years.
