Lowry drop two, tie Elko in three-match stretch

After winning four of its first five Division I-A North matches to start the season, the Lowry High School girls soccer team hit a bump in the road last week during Homecoming.

The Lady Bucks went 0-2-1 in their three matches to drop to fifth place in the standings. Lowry will look to accomplish what it did last year. After a rough patch in the middle of the season, the Lady Bucks finished strong with six consecutive victories. For now, Lowry is looking to get back on track.

“It was a tough week for us,” said LHS senior Cheyanna Wolicki. “We need to get back to playing as a group. We need to start connecting on our passes. We have been playing together for so long, we need to act like it.”

Lowry knocked off by Sparks

Lowry concluded a busy week on Saturday afternoon against Sparks. The Railroaders, who improved to 5-3-1 in league play, had just the minimum 11 players. For a short time in the second half, Sparks had just nine players on the field due to a yellow card and an injury. However, the Lady Bucks could not take advantage of the Railroaders’ misfortune.

Mileidy Cano put the Railroaders on the board in the 35th minute, on a shot that went off the bar and in the net. The assist came from Angie Hurtado. Sparks held the 1-0 lead until the 58th minute, when Lizeth Garcia scored on a penalty kick.

Lowry had its chances to score, and finally got on the board in the 68th minute. Senior Maddie Mayo used her left foot to get the ball past the Sparks goalie. Despite a couple chances, the Lady Bucks could not provide the tying goal.

Lowry shut out against Truckee

Lowry began the weekend by hosting Truckee and the perennially tough Wolverines left Winnemucca with a 3-0 win.

Truckee scored two goals in the first half, as the contest was played on the LHS baseball field because of the football game. Once again, Lowry had its chances around the goal, but could not get a shot in the net.

Lindsay Pate, the Lady Buckaroo goalie, stopped a penalty shot in the second half, but Truckee scored on a free kick as time expired.

Lady Bucks tie Indians

Lowry started the busy week with a trip to Elko last Wednesday. The Lady Bucks beat the Indians in the preseason Spring Creek Jamboree, but could only manage a 1-1 tie this time around.

Elko led just 90 seconds into the match, when, Luz Rodriguez scored on a shot from the left edge of the goal. The Lady Bucks tied the match midway through the first half, off a corner kick. Elko’s goalie came out to catch the ball, but the ball got loose and went in the net for the equalizing goal.

Lowry (6-4-1 overall, 4-3-1 Division I-A North) travels to Fernley on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. match.

The Lady Bucks are back home Saturday to play Churchill County at noon.

“We still have everyone to play in the second half,” Wolicki said. “Hopefully, we can get out of our funk. We need to learn from this week.”
