Humboldt County Rodeo Club makes season debut in Ely

Members of the Humboldt County High School Rodeo Club traveled to Ely this past weekend for the first sanctioned rodeo of the 2015-16 season. Cutting and reining classes, as well as shooting sports were held on Friday, Sept. 25, with the balance of traditional rodeo events taking place Saturday and Sunday.

There were a number of standout performances by the athletes.

Lowry senior Trase Bell finished fourth in the steer wrestling on Saturday, with a time of 20.350 seconds.

Bell placed second in steer wrestling on Sunday with a time of 17.070 and he was ninth in tie-down roping at 19.020. Bell, along with his younger brother, Quint Bell, were eighth in team roping on Sunday with a time of 15.880. Quint Bell was third in steer wrestling on Saturday at 19.020.

Humboldt County’s Ty Mehiel provided a first-place finish in bull riding on Saturday, with 76 points, with the only successful ride. Teammate, Chris Gleason took the top honor on Sunday, with 66 points, and once again was the only rider to stay on for eight seconds.

Coming off his successful run at the National High School Finals Rodeo in July, Lowry senior Shaun Mentaberry picked up right where he left off in the in the saddle bronc. He tied for second on Saturday with 58 points

On the girls side, Lowry freshman Julianne Montero finished first in barrel racing at 17.889 on Saturday to go with a fifth-place performance in goat tying at 9.50. She was 11th in pole bending in a time of 22.968. On Sunday, Montero was second in goat tying at 9.190, fourth in barrel racing (18.201) and eighth in pole bending (22.448)

Also on Saturday, Danyelle Draper (4.76), Marie Curtis (4.76) and Marie Curtis (4.81) were second, third and fourth, respectively, in breakaway roping.

Draper also placed seventh in goat tying at 9.74 and Megan Miller (22.330) and Kerstin Christiansen (22.385) were sixth and eight in pole bending.

In other performances on Sunday, Dusty Robertson was third in goat tying at 9.39, Curtis was seventh in breakaway roping in a time of 5.520, Kenadee Miller (18.300) was seventh in barrel racing and Christiansen was seventh in pole bending in a time of 21.937.

Humboldt County also strong outings from Patrice Stewart and Maclyn Crnkovich.

On the junior high level, Paradise Valley eighth-grader Cade Bell was one of the top finishers in each of his events.

In total, more than 20 members of the Humboldt County team traveled and competed at Ely. Humboldt County had more student-athletes in attendance than any other club in the state.

Humboldt County travels next to Spanish Springs on Saturday and Sunday at the Gandolfo Arena in Sparks. The state association has five weekends of rodeo action scheduled for the fall, and then picks up again the last weekend in February for its spring schedule.
